The final HC race of the season. So many ranking points on offer, leaving a lot at stake in the positional battles - including the all-important promotion fight.
We have an 8 man breakaway: Doi, Mazzanti, Cioni, Belda, Fuglsang, Parra Bustamente, Wegelius, and Williams
And controlling the pace of the peloton are Santander and Vespa
Skipping to the big hill of the day, the break leads by 1'30
And here goes the attacks. Gil, Kirchen, Kessler, Ignatiev
Visconti is next
Bertagnolli, Anza, Ben Nasser and Goss follow
Now comes Walsleben, Nocentini, Ginanni and Vicioso
Valverde launches himself, as Gilbert and Fedrigo also attack
Attacks merge into the break, and Valverde and Kirchen look to go clear
But now its the descent, and we are together as a group of 21
Valverde, Kessler, Ginanni, Ben Nasser, Visconti, Bertagnolli, Anza, Gil, Nocentini, Mazzanti, Kirchen, Gilbert, Doi, Fuglsang, Ignatiev, Vicioso, Wegelius, Cioni, Williams, Parra, Bustamente and Belda
Basso and Fedrigo are in pursuit
Cioni tries a move, but having been in the break, lacks the strength to go clear - and we are also in the midst of the downhill
Crash!
2 riders down
But both are from the early break, Wegelius and Williams
We hit the flat now, 6km to go, and attack by Mikhail Ignatiev!
Tactics appear to be emerging here. Who needs the points - and who is willing to exert effort to make they get them? 100% Me are a secure 3rd, and the rest seem to be hesitating over responding to Ignatiev
Kirchen makes a mini-move getting a gap - Jack Wolfskin another team outside the battles, already promoted
Ginanni blinks first of the rest, looking to ride across to Kirchen, but with numerous others in tow
But what of Valverde, needing a score to retake the lead in the individual rankings - he is right at the back, sat just behind Gilbert and Nocentini
Ginanni closes in on Kirchen, following him are Ben Nasser, Kessler, Vicioso and Anza
Ignatiev meanwhile has built up a very good lead
Kirchen has edged away again in the battle for 2nd, as Vicioso launches himself past promotion rivals Ginanni and Kessler
Just behind them, Visconti is bringing Bertagnolli up towards the battle
All the action is happening behind, so Ignatiev turns to take a look
It's only a brief glance though, so he wont have seen Ginanni almost sprinting backwards. He risked closing down Kirchen, but its gone horribly wrong, now being passed by Visconti and Bertagnolli - 2 more promotion rivals
Mikhail Ignatiev wins Milano - Torino!
Kirchen holds on for 2nd, while Vicioso sprints in for what could be a crucial 3rd. Anza is next, before Ben Nasser, Kessler, Visconti, Bertagnolli and then Ginanni
Gil will take 10th - but where is Valverde? 13th, just ahead of Nocentini and Gilbert. Its now going to be touch and go whether he takes over the individual rankings lead.
