Almost time for the Giro Del Lazio.
The field is small but full of quality so this one should be a hotly contested race. Anza and Kirchen are the men for Continental kingpins Sony-Erricson and Jack Wolfskin. Hungry for success too are Vespa-Caffrey's led Francesco Ginanni, while Wiggle will be looking to Nocentini and Bertagnolli to deliver in their push for promotion. Ben Nasser cannot be discounted and if he has a good day, could well snatch the victory.

Difficult to comment on this as I know the result, but I'm pleased that it played out like a hilly classic. Attacks in the hills and not on the flat run in to the finish were what made the difference.
I mentioned Ben Nasser because he was the first of the 2* favourites shown in the pre-race screen. |

Im hijacking this thread to include MilanoTorino - you might want to add Piemonte aswell fenian, just make it 1 thread for the Italian races

Top 5 is a sponsor goal I think at Milan-Torino. Hoping for more though from Ginanni. Having said that, with the field, Top 5 would be pleasing too. |

I would like to think Valverde is also a favourite for Milan-Torino

Team goal was to win Lazio. Didn't.
2nd was an OK result for Ginanni, but with the team Vespa had at this race and the size of the field, I'd have liked a points haul similar/more that what Wiggle have come away with. |

Very interesting for the promotion battle there, points for Vespa, but it looks like more for Wiggle

I'd expect something similar for Milan-Torino too. Vespa and Sony both had the 5* line-ups and ended up doing most of the work throughout the stage.
Wiggle with a 4* team didn't get the responsibilty so their riders didn't burn themselves out chasing like Bettini, Proni, and Bosisio did. Basso strangely was given a free role in the race.
I'm hoping at Milan-Torino maybe Santander will get the 'Vespa' role. |

Sony have a weaker team in Torino though, so Vespa and Santander are likely to be doing the work

Yes, Kirchen was in that second group coming down the hill. Some riders got across, I'm not sure why he didn't. Possible he attacked on the downhill and just sat up again. |

well he achieved the other 2 individual goals so I can't be mad at him. He won after all Profonde van Drenthe which I think it was a more important goal that Lazio

The second time I have two riders in the front messing things up. Might need to change the tactic for next season for hilly races with flat finishes.

Nice to see Kirchen getting a podium even though it was the wrong Italian race
Also we can still catch Sony Ericsson
