The first stage of the race is also the longest and the only one that has a categorized climb on its route. As you probably already know a mass sprint is expected today
Only 3 riders got away in the breakaway of the day. Those were Clancy, Montano and Vassdal
Clancy was the strongest sprinter in the group and he showed that by winning the first sprint of the day. But quite surprising he lost the other 2 to Montano
100% Me were the only strong team with a rider in the breakaway so they didn't chase it down. Aon Global and Lego were the most interested teams to bring the escapes pack and they did a really nice job even though the max advantage that the escapes gap was somewhere around 11 minutes
On the only climb of the day, which is actually the only climb of the race, Montano left the other 2 behind and went by himself to become the KoM classification leader and now he just needs to finish the race to get his prize. Schroder and Gomis Lopez attacked behind him from the pack to get the other points
A few kilometers later Montano was caught and we are heading to a mass sprint. We still can't see any of the sprint trains even though Lego, Nokia - Nike, 100% Me, NOS and Kenda brought a few riders to the front
Lego looked to be the strongest team, with Schroder and Baumann taking the lead of the pack for Ciolek
Kenda, Molteni and 100% ME tried to make their own trains but failed and Lego looked to be the best positioned for the sprint
But Schroder left Ciolek alone in front quite soon with more than 2 kilometers before the finish. And the German didn't look to be in a good position with Freire, Vaitkus, Lorenzetto, Swift and Van Heerden right behind him
As soon as they reached the final kilometer, they all tried to pass Ciolek but only Freire looked like having the power to do that, while Vaitkus was struggling to keep it up with the 3 times World Champion
And Freire was the fastest there winning the stage and becoming the first leader of the race. He was followed on the podium by Ciolek and Vaitkus
