Its the first mountain stage of the race, but with the distance between the last climb and the finish, it is unlikely to be too decisive
A 5 man break goes clear: Hunt, Rinner, Zaini, Stoltz and Diggle. Behind them, the IKEA pair of Balck and Linden are in a joint pursuit, but will never catch them.
Hunt was dropped on the first climb, as Zaini takes the KoM pts
Zaini disastrously punctures in the descent, but a hard chase sees him return to the front
But he is not strong enough to prevent Diggle take the points this time
Zaini returns to the top spot at the 3rd climb
Time to go back to the peloton though, as Jose Alarcon attacks right at the foot of the 4th climb
Phinney is right with him, and they quickly catch Alarcon's teammates Balck and Linden
Eastman also got a small gap from that attack, unlike other attackers Rovny and Gallopin but more attacks soon come. Keizer, Ratiy, Mai, Kunshin, Van Stayen and Rajala give it a go - before race leader Van Garderen launches a move with Hacecky
Up front, Phinney and Alarcon have caught Rinner, Diggle and Zaini - with Stoltz already dropped
A minute and a half behind them, Keizer, Ratiy and Hacecky are closing in on Stoltz - Van Garderen battling to keep up with them
Finally! Henao Montoya attacks
Its a late response - particularly to main rivals Phinney and Alarcon - and he can only get as far as the Keizer, Hacecky, Ratiy, and Van Garderen group
Alarcon is putting the pressure on Phinney as he summits first, the American close enough though to avoid a gap emerging
1'45 later, we have Hacecky, Van Garderen, Keizer and Ratiy
Van Garderen is dropped and a further 30 seconds back, before Zaini and Madrazo come over, looking to catch the race leader.
Tenorio, Mai and Kunshin are also clear of the pack, 3'30 behind the leaders - with the 29 man peloton just under 4 minutes behind
A good descent by Van Garderen sees him catch Henao Montoya, Hacecky, Keizer and Ratiy
Or was it just a bad sprint by the other 4? The gap to Phinney and Alarcon has risen above 2 minutes, this is a real opportunity for the pair to gain on pre-race favourite Henao Montoya
Inside 15km to go, and Van Garderen has attacked and got a gap on the other 4 in his group!
Those 4 are really stuttering on this descent, with Madrazo now catching them
And attacks from the peloton as the road flattens Granjel Cabrera, Duenas Nevado, Barton, Vanderbiest and Van Stayen - it appears that Tenorio, Kunshin and Mai have been caught
With 5km to the finish, Keizer, Ratiy and Hacecky look to attack Madrazo and Henao Montoya - they dont want to lose time on Van Garderen
As up front the sprint is on, Alarcon vs Phinney
Here goes Phinney, making his mov
Adn Taylor Phinney wins the stage!
1'54 later, Martin Hacecky beats Van Garderen for 3rd, having caught him late on
Ratiy is 4th, ahead of Henao Montoya and Madrazo - but there seems to be more riders close behind now
The view from the peloton says it all. The flatter finish, allowed more attacks, and less gap. Phinney and Alarcon have gained time, but everyone else, from 3rd to 42nd, are awarded the same time
