The first stage is hilly, but not very hilly. Still, today's is the first to GC favourites to perform.
Rénier and Eastman escape from the peloton to form the BOTD.
But they aren't alone in the adventure as far behind there is a group containing Albert, Camier, Pires, Tang, Vande Velde, Franzoi, Sohrabi, Remme and Last.
Starbucks, Olympus and IKEA control the race.
The two front groups join with 99km to go. The gap is around 6 minutes.
Albert attacks to win the only mountain sprint of this stage. 66km yet to run and the gap is 4 minutes and a half. The peloton is being led by the same teams as in the beginning of the stage.
The peloton is riding hard but Bru Pascal and Kunitski decide to attack with 57km to go.
The duo is caught with 31km to go. By this time, Jack Wolfskin is also helping in the peloton which will have to recover 2 minutes and 10 seconds to the early breakaway riders.
During the final hill, attacks in the peloton: Samoilev, Raisin, Donald and Weening, but only Weening gets a gap.
Weening catches the first group that lost riders on the hill. By this time, only 8 riders plus Weening are there: Rénier, Eastman, Tang, Last, Pires, Remme, Albert and Sohrabi, but Vande Velde and Franzoi would join after. 14km to go and the gap to the peloton is around a minute.
Danielson is off in the downhill!
He catches the front group with 9km to go. The gap to the is 55 seconds.
Danielson takes the lead of the first group and Last, Pires, Franzoi, Sohrabi, Vande Velde and Eastmen are immediately dropped.
The gap to the peloton doesn't decrease and, with 4km to go, Weening is in Danielson's wheel.
The sprint opens and Danielson still leads.
Albert is passing Danielson in the entrance of the last kilometer.
And Niels Albert wins the first stage! Tang gets the second place and Danielson closes the podium and wins important time in the fight for the overall victory.
Pires is the first of the second group. This group have a slight advantage over the peloton which might not be awarded by the judges, where the first was Farrar but he couldn't even get a top 10.
