A hilly classic in Italy and even though he is not at home Valverde has a nice chance to take a 4th win this month after his opening wins in Spain. But the Italians might take an advantage of their nationality bonus and take this one, the main favorites to do that being Nocentini, Bertagnolli and Ghisalberti. But also Trofimov, the Germans, Kessler and Wegmann or the French riders, Calzati and Fedrigo, could be a real threat to Valverde.

I forgot that my team would race this. In a bad month, a top 5 would please me. |

Good strong field here. Hope Bettini or Proni are good enough to get a decent result. |

nice, no Ginanni, the uphill finish should mean that Valverde just needs to be in the front group to take victory.

48 Paolo Bettini Vespa-Caffrey's + 5'05????
What happened there then?
Good ride from Proni, and excellent from Tonti, but Bettini must have crashed I presume. |

I'm pretty sure he didn't crash. He just couldn't hang on in the pack

From experience in continental hilly races, after whoever is going to attack, has attacked, the pack tends to sit up, and depending on rider positioning, can split up, with riders generally not too bothered.

I'm pretty sure I would have noticed if I crashed so he might have been one of your riders that chased down the breakaway, as Vespa brought some riders at the front sometimes, but not in 'crucial' moments.

According to the start list he was team leader. Weird that Tonti got such a good result, and a much stronger rider, Bettini didn't do anything.
Anyway, c'est la vie. |

The startlist isnt always accurate in terms of team leader - daily form could also have had an impact, for example

Much better than Plouay, guess that Ghisalberti got disappointed here when Trofimov didn't let him be the leader in his home race and messed things up the next race in vengeance. Close to beeing sold now.
