The great thing about this race is that you just never know which rider type will triumph. In the 3 races on this course last season, the French champs and World U23 champs were decided in a sprint of a sizeable group, with those who made it over the hills - but in the Elite Worlds champs the puncheurs ripped up the race as a group of 13 were left to sprint out what was a surprising finish.
Franco Pellizotti became World Champion, and he appears to be the only one from the Worlds Top 10 who return to this race. A couple of other notable puncheurs here are Rodriguez Oliver and Samuel Sanchez. In the worlds, a crazed Spanish directeur sportif ordered them to wait for Oscar Freire, ruining their chances - and are Festina risking the same fate today, as they also bring Hushovd?
Other sprinters hoping for a slow pace on the hills include Bennati, Steegmans and Davis - as well as allrounders such as Pozzato or Hagen.
