The final mountain stage of the race, this one is like all the others, a long flat run to a climb and then a flat run to the finish. Again, an intermediate sprint is on the course:
The intermediate sprint was won by Giling (Jack Wolfskin) in front of Rollin (Ernst and Young). Sano (Ultra), Pacheco (Nespresso), and the KOM leader Arvesen (Nvidia) were 43" back:
With 118km to go, the BOTD was altogether, and they would get a max gap of 10'00". By the time the riders hit the climb, the gap was down to around 5'00" and was falling rapidly. Jaramillo (Starbucks) absolutely drilled the pace up the climb, with around 30 riders holding on.
No one attacked until 1.2 km to go on the climb, when, with Pacheco the only BOTD rider left, Astarloza (NVidia), Evans (Olympus), Efimkin (Starbucks), Fuglsang (Lego), and van der Hugenhaben (Jack Wolfskin) attacked:
They were followed by Valjavec (Ernst and Young), A. Efimkin (Kenda), Gonzalo (Santander), Riblon (Wii), Vasquez (Nespresso):
Pacheco lead over the climb (Arvesen had now, barring an abandonment on the final stage, secured the KOM jersey), with Gil also attacking from the pack, and the the rest of the attackers fighting to catch Pacheco:
On the descent 9 riders came together (11 attackers minus Fuglsang and A. Efimkin), but with 22.5 km to go they had been caught by the pack, creating a lead group of 32 riders.
With 8 km to go, Evans attacked (lost the picture) and he was followed by a bunch of riders. With 1.5 km to go the sprint started, Carrara, Evans, Astarloza, and De Ketele (Kenda) were in front, with 13" to Gil, 9" to Efimkin, Osella (Olympus), and Bagot (Energie), 16" to Colom, and 11" to 25 riders:
De Ketele narrowly beat Carrara in the sprint, with Evans crossing in third:
The entire front group all got the same time (which is a little strange, the gaps were rather large), and, although a 84 km crit remains, Efimkin will almost certainly win the race. Carrara has won the sprint jersey, and of course Arvesen has won the KOM competition.
