The fourth stage of the race is completely flat so we should see another mass sprint. No climbs today means that Ivanov gets to keep his KoM jersey for another day. With the gaps that were made yesterday it will be very hard to see Cornu losing the yellow jersey today
There were 11 escapes in the main breakaway of the day: Tolleson, Te Brake, Hampton, Arvesen, Komkov, Wallays (who had the best GC place: 6 minutes and 22 seconds behind Cornu), Rollin, Mottin, Ortega, Barclay and Remme
No team looked interested in chasing the breakaway and with 100 km before the finish the gap between the escapes and the pack was somewhere at 12 minutes
Hampton won the only intermediate sprint of the day, 60 km before the finish, in front of Mottin and Ortega
But no team is chasing behind them and the pack is 10 minutes back at that point of the race. This is most likely going to be the first successful breakaway
22 km before the finish the escapes split into 2 groups: Rollin, Tolleson, Te Brake, Barclay, Ortega and Arvesen were in the first group, while Hampton, Komkov, Wallays, Mottin and Remme were in the second group
2 kilometers later Ortega attacked from the leading group
He was only followed by Arvesen
And with 10 kilometers left to ride they both look strong enough to continue this until the finish line
The first chasers are 30 seconds behind them but they still have a chance to catch them
Not the same about the second chasing group. They are already 2 minutes behind the leading duo
The pack is 5 minutes behind Ortega and Arvesen but they are coming faster and faster
Ortega and Arvesen entered the last 5 km with the same lead of 30 seconds over their main chasers
Behind them, there was a crash which involved riders like Van Avermaet, Cummings and Raisin. But probably the most the important name caught there was Dees, 6th overall before this stage
With 1 kilometer to go the situation between Arvesen and Ortega is really tight, while the chasers are also closer than ever
After staying behind Arvesen’s wheel for the last 2 kilometers, Ortega makes his move and takes the lead with just 400 meters left
And it’s a win for the Santader rider, second place for Arvesen
Barclay lead the second group and brought it in the same time with the winner
The other escapes were caught by the pack right in the last kilometer. Wallays took the 7th plac, 2 minutes and 14 seconds behind Ortega which means that Cornu has no problems keeping the yellow jersey
