This 20th stage of the Tour is a 51.6 km long time trial. Although it's mostly flats, there is a few hills here and there on the route, although these will probably play no role in the outcome. The Wikipedia duo of Coppel and Zabriskie are the favourites along with Cancellara - but more importantly, this is the last chance for Fothen, Spilak and Plaza to take the leader's jersey from Devolder.

As always, Michael Ford was the first rider to set a good time. He's usually dropped whenever the gradient is above 1.0 %, meaning that he, especially in a Tour like this, is placed in the wrong end of the GC. He's third-last, but was the first to pass the line after overtaking Avelino and Tommersen.

Flens, team mate of Ford, and in the end, he also managed to beat Ford's time with 13 seconds. Next up to beat Flens' time? Another Gazetta dello Sport rider, Dennis van Winden.

It didn't last long, though, as the next rider to pass the line was Donald of the BMC team. He beat Van Winden's time with 29 seconds. Fiedler, placed 124th before this stage, did 45 seconds better than Donald. Shortly after, Hushovd surprisingly did even better, beating Fiedler with 21 seconds.

... then, a top time triallist came along. David Millar was 41 seconds better than Hushovd on the 2nd time check, but in the end, he only managed to cut off 30 seconds of the best time.

69th in the GC, Coppel from Wikipedia, was a pre-stage favourite, but it soon turned out not to be totally deserved. On the 2nd time check, 34 seconds slower than Millar, and Coppel wasn't able to make up for this deficit on his way to the finish. He took 2nd, 15 seconds after Millar.

Another pre-stage favourite was the Swiss Time Trial Champion, Fabian Cancellara, and unlike Coppel, Cancellara turned out to be fully worthy. On the 2nd time check, he had been 1'15 better than Millar, and on the finish line, he had improved this, beating Millar with 1 minute and 36 seconds.

The (probably) only rider who'd be able to do better than Cancellara was Zabriskie. Being 18th in the GC, he was a late starter - but he was quick to prove that he was here to win. Already on the 1st time check, he had done 39 seconds better than Cancellara.

In the mean time, the top 10 of the GC were also making its way on the couse. Devolder would definitely have to put up a superhuman performance to keep his jersey - but on the other hand, the fact that he still has it on the 20th stage of the Tour proves that he's outdone himself.

Thomas Dekker, who's been greatly disappointing in this Tour, soon proved that he wanted to come away from this Tour with one final strong performance. On the 1st time check, he was 2nd, 32 seconds after Zabriskie, 7 seconds better than Cancellara.
Moments later, Devolder passed the 1st check. Of the top 10 riders, Dekker had done the best time, then Karpets (+1'02 to Zabriskie), Pluchkin (s.t.), Fothen (1'03), Plaza (1'04), Devolder (1'10), Spilak (1'12). At this point, it was looking good for Fothen who had already managed to take 7 seconds off the 18 (or 19) he was missing.

Meanwhile, Zabriskie was now heading towards the finish line. He had lost some of his gap on the 2nd time check, beating Cancellara with 27 seconds - but in the end, he had turned on the power again and managed to do 1 minute better than Cancellara. Amazing effort by the World Time Trial Champion.

The top 10 riders had now reached the 2nd time check, and Pluchkin proved that he was motivated to take a step up or two. Overtaking Kohl on the line of the 2nd check also gave him a preliminary 4th place, 1 second better than Karpets. Shortly after, Contador showed that he wasn't really up for it today. Under the 10 km banner, Dekker overtook Contador. And more importantly, Contador Contador was almost a minute worse Pluchkin at this point.

2nd time check gave the following results for the top 10 riders:
Dekker, +1'14 to Zabriskie
Pluchkin, 2'13
Karpets, 2'14
Plaza, 2'15
Fothen, 2'16
Devolder, 2'31
Spilak, 2'35
Intxausti, 2'49
Contador, 3'03
... and Kohl apparently out of top 60. More importantly, Fothen is now just seconds away from taking the yellow jersey.

As Devolder passed the 2nd time check, Karpets reached the finish line - and he did so in a fourth place, 2'44 after Zabriskie. Shortly after, Pluchkin moved Karpets a spot down, having done the course 2 seconds better. Kohl had done a tad better on the last kilometres, as he was now in top 60 - 54th, 5'28 worse than Zabriskie. Obviously not a good day for this guy.

Dekker was next to show up at the finish line, having overtaken Contador on the way. He took the third best time, 1'24 after Zabriskie - and 1 minute and 12 seconds better than Pluchkin. Contador came in shortly after, 3'49 after Zabriskie.
As said, this wasn't Intxausti's day either. He did do better than Contador, almost 20 seconds, but he was still 2 minutes slower than Thomas Dekker.

Next up were the three riders who were within one minute of Devolder. Plaza came in just outside of the top 5, 2'44 after Zabriskie. Spilak did surprisingly well, but it wasn't enough to keep off Plaza from his spot. And shortly after, it was time for the duel for the leader's jersey - and probably the overall win. Fothen came in as 8th, 2'45 after Zabriskie, 1 second slower than Plaza.

And ... Devolder. He certainly did outdo himself, ending up with taking a 10th place. But is it enough to keep the jersey?
