After the mountains, we're now back in the rather flat part of France again. Unfortunately, we've previously seen that these flat/hilly stages have been used by the GC contenders to attack - will that happen again on this stage?

The first group of breakaway riders didn't get far before getting caught again. Instead, the following were succesful: Santambrogio, Talabardon, Coyot, Sokolov, Brandt and Redondo. Ortega was having trouble rejoining the group, while Eastman, Gerrans and Deignan attacked at a later point and were trying to bridge the gap.
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage18Screen2.jpg

On the first hill, Coyot was dropped from the breakaway group and instead teamed up with Ortega, Gerrans and Deignan (the latter two had dropped Eastman on the hill). With 100 km to go, they still had a nice gap of more than 10 minutes.

In the peloton, interesting things were happening. Rabobank had launched a rather weird attack on the hill with Ten Dam and Casar, and for whatever reason, Philips were now chasing them. With a rather extreme wind, this was bound to create problems for the peloton.

Especially Wikipedia and Philips were alert to the situation, but due to SIC Radical's work in the peloton, the "attack" didn't really come to anything - except for a reduced time gap between the peloton and the breakaway.

As it was starting to 'cool down', a group of riders surprisingly decided to attack from the peloton: Wegmann, Claeys, De Gendt and Casar with 65 km to go.
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage18Screen4.jpg

They were caught again shortly after, though. And with 50 km to go, it was over for the group of followers (except Coyot who had somehow managed to escape from the group of followers and rejoin the leading group).

On the hill before the finish, several attacks happened in front, and Coyot was the first to give up and drop back to the chasing peloton. And as expected, attacks also came from the peloton, once again with Pluchkin being the one to take initiative.
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage18Screen5.jpg

Gadret, Popovych, Calzati and Kashechkin followed. Pluchkin couldn't keep up and dropped back - and with Spilak attacking, Devolder had to follow too. This prompted Intxausti, Fothen, Plaza and more to attack too, yet Pluchkin seemed done for today.

So, over the top and in the leading group were: Spilak, Devolder, Popovych, Calzati, Gadret, Kashechkin and Sinkewitz. Shortly behind them: Zabriskie, Karpets, Intxausti, Dekker, Klöden, Plaza, Fothen and Casar.

On the downhill section, Karpets, Dekker and Casar decided to drop back to the peloton while Fothen did his best to catch up with the front group. He seemed unsuccessful, though. and even though the peloton couldn't catch them, they were so much within reach that Contador and Barredo had no problems attacking up to the group. With 8 km to go, they had 40 seconds down to the P, 45 up to E1.

In front, Devolder had more in mind than getting rid of Fothen and Plaza - he also had the chance of getting a stage win. Calzati's in front, Gadret in third position, then Kashechkin, Popovych, Spilak and Sinkewitz.

With 1 km to go, Devolder and Calzati are ... well, side by side, contesting the win.
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage18Screen9.jpg

In the end, Devolder takes the stage win! But it also seems like that the Fothen group has somehow managed to bridge the gap during the last 2 kilometres...
