Our first mountain stage of the race, this one is like the other three. It starts flat, with a big climb, and then a descent that flattens out towards the finish. A KOM sprint and an intermediate sprint are the two on road prizes today:

Not surprisingly, we have an early break. Its Hochmann (Lego) and Striska (Ultra Adventure):

Hochmann, by far the stronger sprinter, took the intermediate sprint. Corioni won the sprint for third from the pack. More importantly, Carrara (Olympus), one of the Stage and Race favorites, along with the current leader of the sprint competition, took part in the sprint, and had a small gap ( -22" ) to the pack heading into the climb:

He didn't seem very interested in keeping that gap though, and quickly fell back on the mountain.

Striska won the KOM sprint, just in front of the pack who had caught Hochmann. A few riders attacked for KOM points, but none of them were major favorites. Li was one of those who attacked, and earned enough points to take the KOM jersey outright:

Most of the KOM attackers dropped back to the peloton, but three, Vantornout and Fulsang (Lego), and van der Hugenhaben (Jack Wolfskin), caught Striska, and the four of them had around a minute gap on the descent:

About halfway down the descent, Evans (Olympus) attacked:

He was followed by numerous riders, including Efimkin (Starbucks), Valjavec (Ernst and Young), Riblon (Wii), among others. They, however, were all quickly caught, along with Evans.

As soon as the descent leveled out, two things happened. First of all, the four breakaway riders were caught. Secondly, more attacks began:

The initial attack was Colom (Energie), Goss (Jack Wolfskin), Gonzalo (Santander), Evans, and Efimkin. They were followed by attack after attack after attack.

With 10 km to go, Riblon was in the lead:

Here is the race status at that moment (all gaps to preceding groups):

E1: Riblon
E2 ( +5" ): Ciccarese (Starbucks)
E3 ( +9" ): Evans, Gonzalo, Carrara, Gil (Lego)
E4 ( +13" ): Valjavec
P ( +22" ): 43 Riders

And as the sprint opens up, an attack by Gil has him in the lead, in front of Ciccarese and Riblon. The other 4 riders are still out in front of the pack:

Although Gil had a gap on Ciccarese, the Italian is a much faster sprinter, and takes a remarkable second straight stage:

No gaps were awarded to anyone, but Ciccarese does move into the leaders jersey by benefit of Corioni and most of the other sprinters missing the peloton.
