We head to the mountain stage. The question is, can Taaramae hold on to lead and climb back into the lead of the continental tour, can Nocentini put right his lack of time gained in the hills, will Sony Ericsson stick with Ghisalberti as leader or switch to Pedraza (both being on the same time), and can Basso achieve Vespa-Caffrey's GC sponsor goal. And then theres Perez Cuapio, Lloret and others too.
Oh, and a breakaway.
Mori is there again, with Leukemans, Nakajima, Euser, Sinelobov, Sohrabi and Richeze
The intermediate sprint was taken by Richeze
While the early KoM was taken by Mori - oddly the sprint being placed before the steepest part of the hill. If only Mori had been interested in KoM points in Stage 1 though, Willems is uncatchable in that competition
Speaking of Willems, he attacks the peleton with 23km to go
It fails, so De Maar and Ferrio try, and then surprisingly early, its Nocentini
A risky move by Nocentini, but he soon passes the break - but Mori and Euser respond and are able to catch him again
And it now seems that Nocentinis move could pay off - he is unlikely to be chased down now as race leader Taaramae attacks
Basso, Lloret, Pedraza, Bertagnolli and Ratti respond
Pedraza presses on and into a solo lead
Nocentini sets Bertagnolli to work to chase, while Perez Cuapio links up with this group, and Ratti is dropped
But if anything, Pedraza seems to be gaining time
Bertagnolli gave it his all, but the fact remains that he is not as good a mountain climber as Pedraza, and led by Taaramae, Pedraza's actual GC rivals must take over. Bertagnolli is dropped now, to be passed by Albasini who is on his way up
Albasini does link up - ominous for the chase if they cant stay away from a 72 MO rider - but immediately it causes the rest of the group to attack, led by Lloret
Nocentini is the last of these 5 to attack, but it means little as they all come back together, still trailing Pedraza
The Colombian now leads by 50 seconds!
Just 2.5km to go, time is running out for them
Here we go then, one last effort, Perez Cuapio goes and Taaramae follows
Nothing from Lloret or Nocentini, they just stay behind Basso - is that a mistake? It could well be, since theyve now been caught by Colorado - with the Benfica rider having also dragged Albasini with him
Finally now Nocentini passes Basso, but by now the podium spots for Stage and GC may be gone
A little further up, Perez Cuapio is chasing the now in sight Pedraza. As it stands the Mexican is a net 3rd in GC, and must try to blow away Taaramae in the final km if he is to make that 2nd
For Walter Pedraza has this wrapped up, both Stage and GC
He celebrates in style
The race for 2nd sees Perez Cuapio triumph, but Taaramae does enough to finish on the same time and take 2nd in GC
Somehow, Albasini sprints to 4th place - perhaps benefiting from the great help from Colorado. Nocentini is 5th, but these positions reverse in GC due to time bonuses from Stage 1
Basso, Lloret and Colorado also finish in the same time
Next in is the effective peleton, howver it is split apart in the sprint to the line, with Bosisio and Ghisalberti the first, rounding out the Top 10 with a small gap on the rest
