Our first non-flat stage of the tour, stage three is a hilly stage with a long descent, followed by a long but not hard climb, and then a flat run to the finish. Two intermediate sprints and a KOM sprint are the only prizes on the route today:
The initial sprint is won by yellow jersey holder Corioni (Energie):
Not long after, 14 different riders would attack. They would form multiple groups, but would eventually come together as they hit the bottom of the climb with 96 km to go and a 4'35" lead, the largest it would get all day:
The group was Tang (Ultra Adventure), Fischer (Nespresso), Barrio (Wii), Merino Criado and Nino (Santander), Rollin (Ernst and Young), Bladzun (NVidia), Dekkers and Giling (Jack Wolfskin), Ciccarese (Starbucks), and Van Mingeroet and Renier (Kenda).
Around halfway up the climb, Pacheco (Nespresso) and Glomser (NVidia), both decent, but certainly not quality, puncheurs, attacked from the pack, in an attempt to catch the breakaway:
Rollin would lead (uncontested) through the KOM sprint. His teammate Li, by virtue of some higher order, was given the KOM jersey for tomorrow over Dyadichkin (both are tied at 32 KOM points). Meanwhile Pacheco and Glomser were 1'05" back, while the pack was an additional 3'21" in arears:
At the next intermediate sprint, Dekkers would take the honors, with Pacheco and Glomser having just caught up (Pacheco is the Nespresso rider in 4th). There was 46.8 km to go, and the pack was only 2'40" out in front, with Energie leading the chase. Needless to say, things didn't look good for the break:
However, with just over 40 km to go, and the gap not falling, Efimkin (the Starbucks model) decided to give it a go, and in doing so broke the race open:
He was followed by Gil (Lego) and Evans (Olympus):
And then by everybody and their mother. I can't even begin to list who attacked, but it ranged from the expected subjects (Colom Mas, Valjavec), to the completely unexpected (Goss).
With 15 km to go, the situation was as follows (all gaps to preceding group):
E1: Break + Loosli (Nespresso) and Carrara (Olympus)
E2 (+26): Vasquez (Nespresso), Goss (Jack Wolfskin), Gonzalo (Santander)
P (+41): Everyone else minus 4 riders who had been dumped on the climb
And then more riders promptly attacked, both from the pack and from the break, leading to this utterly surprising situation:
Yep, thats right, Tang was leading with 5 km to go. He had 16" on a group of riders (a mix of breakaway guys and others who had attacked from the pack). A few riders (including Richeze) were in no man's land, and then the pack was about 40" back of the 16-man group.
By the time the sprint was about to start, Tang had been caught, and Richeze had come through with a few riders, and was at the front of the breakaway group. By this time though the pack was breathing down the break's neck, and it looked like it was going to be a disorganized mass sprint.
With 2.3 km to go, Richeze started to sprint around the corner, when suddenly Raisin (Ernst and Young) flew by him into the lead...........
and promptly crashed.
Richeze it turned out, how gone from way too far out, and began to fade. In the end it came down to Carrara and Cicarrese, with the Starbucks rider beating out his compatriot, who was stuck with a second straight runner-up spot (he would get the green jersey as a consolation):
Corioni would again keep the yellow, as everyone except for the 4 riders who were dropped got the same time. He will almost certainly lose it tomorrow however, as we hit the true mountains for the first time.
