Tour de France - Stage 9
CrueTrue

222 km long, this is a fairly long stage considering the fact that we're going up and down two mountains. Both of them aren't very steep, though, so the major differences won't be made on this stage. Hopefully, we will get to see some action, though.

Without much 'discussion' and drama, five riders were allowed to go: Possoni, Dessel, Geslin, Gerrans and Coyot - not really the best bunch of climbers, although Dessel is average.
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage9Screen2.jpg

Until this stage, all breakaways had been kept within a distance of 8 minutes. This one was the first to break that barrier. But with a team such as British Airways leading the peloton, that was no surprise. With 125 km to go, the gap was 12'30, and Philips had had enough and took control with SIC Radical.

Up the hill before the two mountains, Geslin and Coyot were dropped from the front group, leaving Gerrans, Possoni and Dessel. At the foot of the first climb, they had a gap of 4'30 to the peloton - not very remarkable, really.
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage9Screen4.jpg

The high pace from Philips and SIC meant that the peloton was reduced greatly on the climb - and once again, Chavanel proved to be Devolder's only support. That didn't mean much on this first climb, though, as the only attacks that appeared were the ones who fought for the mountain points. On short-term basis, Gerrans was succesful in the breakaway, though, as he took over the virtual mountains jersey after winning the hill and the climb's competitions.
He wouldn't be able to score on the next one, though, as his breakaway group was caught on the downhill section
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage9Screen5.jpg

Shortly after, the peloton hit the 2nd and final climb of the day - and Pluchkin was determined not to waste any time today! He attacked immediately, and Devolder, who was mentioned only had Chavanel left, was quick to counter.
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage9Screen6.jpg

Contador and Barredo went with them too while the rest of the peloton decided to wait and see. Barredo wasn't fast enough to keep up with the rest who joined up in a trio. They now had 7 km of climbing to do with a 39-man-peloton behind them.
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage9Screen7.jpg

Several riders weren't pleased with the situation, though. So shortly after, Karpets, followed by Kashechkin, Kohl, Plaza and Calzati tried to bridge the gap - and this created yet another storm of attacks, first by Dekker, then Fothen, Spilak, Klöden - and a struggling Intxausti.
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage9Screen8.jpg

Popovych attacked shortly after, but as with Klöden, Barredo, Stetina, Gadret and more, he didn't have the energy to keep up with the favourites group which had established ahead of them. 10 riders were now chasing the trio in front which had 50 seconds with c. 2.8 km to to the top:

With 1 km to go, the favourites group had reeled the three riders in. Contador and Plaza attacked for the usual mountains points, though - and apparently, Contador weren't going to drop back. After some effort, he was back in the group, though.
And on the downhill section, the peloton caught the favourites (or the favourites dropped back?).
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage9Screen10.jpg

Once again, everything was settled for a sprint. In front: Chavanel, Fothen, Spilak, Wielinga, Eltink and Dekker.
i239.photobucket.com/albums/ff74/CrueT/ManGame/TdF10/Stage9Screen11.jpg

And again, it's a very close sprint. Although we're past the line here, it's difficult to see who actually won.

It's a win for SIC Radical's Markus Fothen! They did work hard on this stage, so it's fully deserved.
