Unusually for the Tour, we're starting this one with a 194 relatively flat stage. There'a a final hill at the end, though, which may affect the final outcome. Boonen, Cancellara and Pozzato are among the main favourites, according to the always reliable Cyanide odds setters.

As expected, several riders wanted the honour of being the first to attack in this year's Tour. Four managed to get away: Aulas, Flens, Ten Dam and Knees. For whatever reason, they didn't battle for the mountain jersey, though, and that meant that Laurens Ten Dam (Rabobank) was able to take the first five points with no competition

As Ten Dams also took the next five points, he was now secure of wearing the mountain jersey on the following stage. At this point, their gap is stable at c. 8 minutes.
And as expected, the teams with sprinters on the team soon started upping the pace. Ten Dam did manage to score 5 points for the competition before the group was caught with 28 km to go.

And as always ... the inevitable crash that happens during the first couple of stages in a GT. Luckily, no GT contenders were involved this time. 5 riders went down: Avelino, Berthou, Koldo Fernandez, White Bear Steyr's sprinter, Guillen, and the most remarkable name, Fabio Duarte, Dekker's main helper in the mountains.

In the peloton, everyone were fighting to get to the front - and that led to another crash which brought down a remarkable part of the peloton. Probably around 25 to 30 riders. These included Accumalux's wing man for Intxausti, Perez Fernandez, Unicef's Suaza ... and the most important name: the GT-contender Pluchkin. Terrible start for him. Suzuki were especially unlucky as both wing man Delgado and team leader Karpets crashed. Lipton's leader, Kashechkin, also crashed, and so did Virgin's sprinter, Serebriakov.

As all this happened with less than 3 km to go, the sprinters of course didn't care about this. Instead, they were battling it out for the win. At the front, Eurosport were in charge with Velits leading out for Cavendish and Pineau, followed by the Rabobank duo of Bakelants/Steegmans (who had his former team mate Dekker on his wheel) and the third train consisting of Geslin, Hushovd and Vastaranta.

With 1 km to go, it's (surprisingly) Thomas Dekker versus former team mate Gert Steegmans. Bakelants is fading while Hushovd and Vastaranta are making their way forward. With a gradient of 7.2 %, this can be classified as a very tough hill.

Thomas Dekker takes a surprising win! Steegmans fades completely towards the end, but still manages to take 2nd just ahead of Vastaranta. Question is whether there's more goodies in for Dekker on this stage: Will Pluchkin et al lose time?
