To clear this up for people outside the UK - Ryan Giggs was awarded the BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2009 Award. The word 'personality' is actually meaningless here though.
I expected Giggs to get the award, because even though it was clearly undeserved considering the opposition, it's a popularity contest, and it was inevitable that all the Man United fans in the country would vote for Giggs, along with probably many Welsh.
I'd be interested to see where Cavendish came in the top 10, and hopefully they will sometime release the full results. The trouble is though, very few people actually understand road cycling in the UK. For example, someone this morning claimed that Mark Cavendish hadn't won anything this year, and didn't deserved to be shortlisted

Cavendish himself once said that when he said in England he'd won Milan - San Remo, people asked him whether he played for AC Milan or Inter.

What's wrong with Ryan Giggs winning? He seems like a down-to-earth guy, always top-professional, etc.
I think Giggs has been a great player over the years and indeed seems like a nice person - I'm not saying I disapprove just because I support Liverpool! It's just that this award is supposed to be a recognition of their achievements over the year, and while it's impressive that he is still playing well at his age, it isn't fair to rate him as Britain's best sports person of the year, and as mb2612 has said, there were others more deserving of the award. In fact, nearly all of the other candidates (Strauss and Murray excluded) were at the very top of their discipline this year. The 'Personality' part actually has nothing to do with it all, or at least very little.
Good to see that Cavendish came 4th. Pleasant surprise

Imo, Giggs winning was a travesty. People voted for him for his career, rather than his 2009 achievements alone, and he did not deserve to win on 2009 alone.
