Lots of mountain points today!
Christaina Vandevelde went on an early attack, and in the fight for second place, Koldo Gil took it and a group of 5 formed infront of the peleton: Gil, Kashechkin, Dekker, Vasseur and Gadret. They hung on for a bit but the peleton were determined to chase, Gil and Vasseur dropped back voluntarily, as did Gadret, with the other 2 kept trying to get away.
Vandevelde crossed the next climb with a 7 minute advantage. More attacks came and these 2 crossed the line 2nd and 3rd, and are seen going up the next slope:
Danielson and Dekker.
On top of the next climb, Vandevelde's lead has dropped dramatically. Dekker and Danielson cross 2nd and 3rd. Vila crosses 4th, with Gil 5th.
In the descent theres lots of toing and froing between the attackers. Working then not working, stuff like that. Gil and Vila made it across to Vandevelde first:
The chasing 6 caught them but then Gil broke free. The other 8 were eventually caught, but not Gil:
The peleton were now down to 22 and amazingly, Valverde was still there, while 8th overall Moncoutie was not. Valverde soon cracked and disappeared on the final climb though and Moncoutie did eventually return to the group.
Vinokourov led the attacks early on and Gil was soon passed. 4 riders got a gap:
Vinokourov, Moreau, Schleck and Gadret. In a heroic effort, Gil clung on to whatever energy he had left and crossed in 5th, helping to surely secure his jersey.
Schleck was the best sprinter of the 4, but was badly placed for the sprint and left his move too late. The winner was:
Koldo Gil meanwhile, still was not caught and managed to finish 5th, being caught on the line. He has made a large step in securing the KoM jersey and moved into the Top 20 overall.
