Eladio Jimenez Sanchez has been provisionally suspended by the Union Cycliste Internationale after a positive test for banned blood booster EPO.
The Centro Ciclismo de Loulé rider registered an "adverse analytical finding" of recombinant EPO in a sample taken from the mountainous stage six of the Volta a Portugal, which he won.
33-year-old Jimenez has ridden for Banesto and Comunidad Valenciana in the past. A noted climber, he won three Vuelta mountain stages between 2000 and 2005.
He was initially implicated in Operation Puerto in early July 2006, before being absolved of any wrongdoing by the Spanish courts several weeks later.
In the last couple of years, he has raced for Continental teams in Portugal.
However, before this news, it was hotly rumoured that he would join Rock Racing for next year.
Jimenez has the right to request the analysis of his B-sample.
