Liquigas - Going to the extreme
snoep_de_hond
I've purchased PCM 2009 last week and wanted to try if I could make time to start a new story and get further then 2 pages. This will be my first career in PCM 2009 and my first career on extreme difficulty level.

I've a full time job and because I'm writing this in my spare time and I don't know how fast this story is going to progress. It always takes me a lot of time to write the text (and even then I still make a lot of errors), therefore I'm going to focus on the race reports and minimize the amount of text.

Most of the careers I've started in PCM 07 and PCM 08 are with continental teams, but this time I wanted to try a ProTour team. After looking at which ProTour teams I would like to play with and which stories are around on this site, my choice is to play a career with Liquigas. A strong team and their aren't many stories about them (apart from Guido Mukk's excellent PCM 08 story).

I've already done some work, so let's start with a little intro.

edit: I forgot to tell that I'm playing with the PCM.daily's 2009 DB with slightly altered stats for a few riders.

LIQUIGAS - going to the extreme

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/Logo_Liquigasextreme.jpg

Liquigas have a squad built around experienced riders and up and coming talents, making them one of the strongest squads in the bunch. Their results from 2008 back this up with a total of thirty wins spread throughout the season. On paper they look to have even more firepower for 2009 with the signing of Ivan Basso, returning from his two year suspension, and Sylvester Szmyd coming from Lampre.

Basso will be a key focal point in the major races. He’ll draw support from Franco Pellizotti. In the Tour the team will look to Roman Kreuziger and Vincenzo Nibali to represent the team, while Daniele Bennati aims to be Cavendish’s main sprint rival.

Here is our entire lime green cycling team:

You'll probably know them already, before the team starts their season with the Tour de San Luis and the Tour Down Under I first want to introduce Liquigas' key riders.

As an Italian team Liquigas' season goals are mainly the Italian ProTour races and of course the Tour de France.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/Goals_20091.jpg

The last sponsor and the last goal will be announced later on.

19-01-2009: Tour de San Luis

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/TourSanLuis.jpg

Riders:
Alessandro Vanotti
Brian Vandborg
Ivan Basso
Kjell Carlström
Murilo Fischer
Vincenzo Nibali

Expectations:
Not very high, it's still very early in the season, however Liquigas is the only ProTour team in the race so I'm hoping to see some close finishes.

Stage 1:
i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-19SanLuis1a.jpg
San Luis - Villa Mercedes: (169.0km)

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-19SanLuis1b.jpg
A lot of riders were very happy to be racing again and the results was that during the first half of the race it kept raining attacks. This resulted in a breakaway of 21 riders. Liquigas was represented by Vanotti, who picks up a few bonus seconds along the way.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-19SanLuis1c.jpg
There was not much interest to chaise the break and for some time it looked like the break would make it, but with 40km to go a few teams combined forces and started pulling back time fast. Nonetheless with 20km to go the difference was still more then 2 minutes.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-19SanLuis1d.jpg
With 10km to go the break smelted the victory and attacks followed. It was Aníbal Borrajo from Colavita who managed to leave the rest of the break behind.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-19SanLuis1e.jpg
With 3 km to go the peleton had reeled back every rider except Borrajo, who had a comfortable looking lead.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-19SanLuis1f.jpg
But in the last km Borrajo had trouble keeping his pace and the sprinting peleton was closing in fast.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-19SanLuis1g.jpg
Borrajo just managed to get his front wheel over the finish line first. Martin Pedersen and Fisher came very close, but had to settle for 2nd and 3rd.

I did slightly change the stats of a few riders, but not Nibali and Kreuziger their mountain stats. So these stats come from the PCM.daily's 2009 DB. However Nibali did display slightly better climbing skills this season then Kreuziger. For instance in the Tour Nibali could stay longer with Contador and Andy Schleck.

hellboy
I think Kreuziger is often little bit underrated as the winner of Romandie this season and Suisse Tour last year and one of the best youngsters in Tour in last years
And he almost beat Contador and Andy on Ventoux
But this is not your problem,so good luck in your careerSmile
Go Roman!

Yeah! Another italian story! Good luck! Make Pellizzo do his best in Giro and Tour!

20-01-2009: Tour Down Under

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/TourDownUnder.jpg

Riders:
Aleksandr Kuschynski
Andrea Noè
Claudio Corioni
Francesco Chicchi
Frederik Willems
Jacopo Guarnieri
Maciej Bodnar

Expectations:
With Guarnieri, Corioni and especially Chicchi, Liquigas has a couple of fast man at the start of this first ProTour race of the season, but this is not the ProTour race were Liquigas wants to score.

Stage 1:
i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20TDU1a.jpg
Norwood - Mawson Lakes: (140.0km)

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20TDU1b.jpg
The breakaway of the day, consisting of Pedro Horrillo (RAB), Valeriy Dmitriyev (AST), Nicolas Jalabert (AGr) and Servais Knaven (MRM), manage to create gap of 7 minutes with the peleton.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20TDU1c.jpg
However Quickstep, for tom Boonen, and Vacansoleil, for Baden Cooke, start working well in time and bring everything back together more then 20km before the finish line.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20TDU1d.jpg
It's Quickstep that gets rewarded for their work. Boonen beats Breschel (SAX) and Arashiro (BBT) and he is this season first ProTour leader.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20TDU1e.jpg
Liquigas didn't manage to keep Chicci fresh due to the relative hilly terrain. The best Liquigas rider today is Corioni with a 13th place. Chicci finishes 17th.

20-01-2009: Tour de San Luis

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/TourSanLuis.jpg

Stage 2:
i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20SanLuis2a.jpg
San Luis - Mirador El Potrero: (145.2km)

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20SanLuis2b.jpg
The 3 breakaway riders of the day were Gaël Malacarne (BSC), Jeremy Venell (BPC) and Neil Shirley (KBS).

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20SanLuis2c.jpg
All the teams were afraid of Basso and Nibali and not willing to chase down the break. So when the gap had grown to 9 minutes with only 70 km left, Liquigas sent Carlström, Fisher and Vanborg to the front of the peleton.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20SanLuis2d.jpg
When the peleton reached the bottom of the 15km long climb to the finish the gap was less then 4 minutes. Vanotti set the pace up the climb and for 5km he gave everything he had left.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20SanLuis2e.jpg
Then it was time for Basso to do the rest by himself. He put in a furious attack. Ángel Vicioso (ACA) tried to bridge the gap with Nibali on his wheel.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20SanLuis2f.jpg
4km from the top Basso reached the break and didn't waste much time leaving them behind.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20SanLuis2g.jpg
3km to go, Basso is still in the lead. Vicioso is 45 seconds behind him with Venell, the last of the breakaway riders, barely hanging on. Nibali is 4th and is slowly losing terrain on Vicioso.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20SanLuis2h.jpg
Basso reached the last km, he had extended his lead on Vicioso to 1 minute and Basso's and Liquigas' first victory of the season looks in the bag.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20SanLuis2i.jpg
Basso is todays winner. His first victory after his suspension. He shows he will be force to be reckon with this season.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-20SanLuis2j.jpg
Nibali was struggling the last few km, but manages to hang on to 6th place.

I think the reason is that you're just listed pretty much his career achievements to date. At Liqui he is limited as to how much he's able to be a leader. Either needs others to step aside, or move to become a leader elsewhere.

Stage 2:
i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-21TDU2a.jpg
Hahndorf - Stirling: (148.0km)

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-21TDU2b.jpg
After the first couple of attacks a group of 7 breakaway riders has formed with amongst them Noè, Marzoli (ASA) and García Acosta (GCE). However surprisingly Canellara wants to show his power on a short climb with more then 100km to go and sprints past the break, taking the bunch with him and ending the break.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-21TDU2c.jpg
It gets even weirder when after the second sprint Boonen decides to go and breakaway. He gets a couple a minutes and is only reeled in 30km before the finish line.

i749.photobucket.com/albums/xx136/snoep_fruitstengel/LIQ/2009-01-21TDU2d.jpg
Because of the fast pace, the difficult terrain, several of crashes and an uphill finish about half of the peleton lost more then a minute on the stage winner. Among the casualties were a lot of sprinters like; Francesco Chicchi, Mark Renshaw (THR), Jürgen Roelandts (SIL), José Joaquín Rojas (GCE), Greg Van Avermaet (SIL), Sébastien Chavanel (FDJ), Roger Hammond (CTT) and Gert Steegmans (KAT).

When the peleton reached the uphill section to the finish Liquigas still had 3 riders present. Besides Kuschynski and Noè it was especially Frederik Willems who gave a strong impressions.

Last km and we have 5 riders who are fighting for the stage win: Trofimov (BBO), Flecha (RAB), Bertolini (SDA), Roche (ALM) and Pierrick Fédrigo (BBO). Because of a lake of sprinting power, Willems has fallen back to the third row.

Willems finishes in 15th place and gets the same time as stage winner Juan Antonio Flecha. This is not the case for Kuschynski and Noè, because of a gap between the 34th and 35th rider in the peleton they loose 47 seconds.
