Vuelta a España - Stage 8

With Intxausti in the Amarillo jersey, we head into the second consecutive mountain stage. Luckyly for some of the riders though, todays stage is only 160km short. There is definatly no lack of climbing kilometers though; 4 climbs, including a finish at the top of the Plat de Beret.
As Intxausti only holds a 12 second lead over Schleck (who was the best yesterday), he'll have to dig deep to keep his jersey. So all elements for an exciting stage are there. Now, bring it on!


Early in the stage, three riders crashed: Steensen, Vanoverschelde and Gazvoda. All regain contact with the pack though, and seem okay.

As the figth to get in the early break hasn't finished by the time we reach the first climb, we get climbers attacking to get in it as well. And just just any random climber goes; it's the GC number 12, Oscar Pereiro Sio!

And shortly after, it's Serpa, trying to forget yesterdays crash.

But as, sadly, Serpa doesnt get very far, it's now Rujano's turn. He's number 8 in GC... the GC guys are starting early today!

As Rujano quickly reaches the first groupe, where teammate Zaballa was waiting for him, the gap is still not big. Pereiro, Engels, Keizer and Miholjevic are here as well, with Belotti trying to make contact. The road is getting flatter now though, which may favour the pack.

And indeed, as we reach the second steep part, everything is back together.

Only for the same riders to attack again, 200m later.

But this time, they kept their gap; Rasmussen leads over the top with Serpa and Keizer right behind and Engels, Zaballa and Monfort not far either.

However, they're not allowed to go in the decent.

At the foot of the second climb, Serpa and Rasmussen hold a small lead.

Then, not much happends on this climb. Everybody seems to be satisfied with this situation. Finally.
Rasmussen takes the points as they are 2 minutes ahead of the peloton.

Marquez only just manages to beat Rujano for the remaining KOM points, as Serpa now leads the KOM classification by 1 point to Schleck.

Then in the decent everybody settles, getting ready for the final two climbs. At the foot of the first and biggest one, Serpa and Rasmussen hold just under 3 minutes.

Sanchez Gil then is the first one to go with 37km to go.

But Phinney prevents him from taking more then 30 seconds, as they all close in on the two leaders.

And then Plaza launches his attack with 6.6km to the top, while they have nearly caugth up with the race leaders.

As Abal and Marquez follow, while Duarte failed to do so, Castano is about to lead a new string of attacks. No big gaps though.

And here go Intxausti and Schleck. Number one and two, side by side.

And together, they takeover the race lead.

Only for Uran to join (and pass) them.

Perez Sanchez is here for the KOM points though, as no big gaps are estabalished going into the decent.

Actually, no gaps at all occur. So, with 38 men we head towards the final climb. The arch of the final 10km can already be seen.

De la Fuente starts off first; 8.5km left.

But as he, nor Sanchez Gil get anywhere, its now Plazas and Schlecks turn.

As Rujano joined them, Intxausti migth be a bit late with reacting. Perez Sanchez joins him.

3.7km, And Schleck seems to be on the roll again: Intxausti doesnt make it up to him!

But heading towards the final kilometer, Gomez Marchante, Uran and Castano do! Mr. Intxausti, mind you, your jersey is at stake!

The finish is around the corner, Castano is out for the sprint. Schleck vs. Marchante vs. Uran!

And takes it! Schleck is second, Castano came back up for third while Marchante faded to fourth.

Plaza leads in the first groupe with Intxausti at 30 seconds; Schleck has got the jersey.
