Another hilly stage, therefore the favourites are the usual ones. Can we expect any surprise in this stage which could be decisive?
The stage starts with a mountain sprint. There are plenty of attacks and De Kort (between the two motorbikes) takes it in front of Cavalli and de Romijn. The attacking riders would be caught a bit later.
VÃtor, De Kort, Froome, de Romijn and Ascani attack a bit later to try to form the break of the day.
Neves, Van Zeedbeek and Hicks try, a few kilometeres later, to bridge to the front group.
Froome takes the next KOM sprint. Van Zeedbeek and Ascani complete the podium.
The British rider gets a gap on the rest of the group during the next classified hill. De Kort and de Romijn take the rest of the points. The peloton led by Wii Racing and EON Ruhrgas is at 4 minutes of Froome.
There are more moves in the pack. Diaz Corrales, Sieberg, Pagoto, Caruso, Mazzanti and Sampaio attack. Froome is still in the front with a minute advantage over the chasing group of which Hicks is no longer part as he was dropped.
Fall for Priamo, the 13th overall.
Perhaps knowing his teammate's group isn't gaining much ground, Ivanov attacks.
The situation on the next KOM sprint (56km to go):
E1 (Froome, who is the new virtual leader of the mountain classification).
+ 1'15 - E2 (Van Zeedbeek, de Romijn, Ascani, VÃtor, Neves, De Kort). Van Zeedbeek and de Romijn take the rest of the points, respectively.
+ 1'35'' - E3 (Pagoto, Mazzanti, Hicks, Diaz Corrales, Sieberg, Caruso, Ivanov and Sampaio).
+ 1'09'' - P, led by Wii Racing and AON Global.
The intermediate sprint is passed and Neves takes the second place ahead of VÃtor. Obviously, Froome took the first place. Also, de Romijn seems to lose contact with the group.
While the peloton is reaching the intermediate sprint, the last piece of the group which attacked in the middle of the stage is caught. Pagoto and Mazzanti were the last of that group to be caught. With less than 40km to go, the peloton (lead by AON Global, Wii Racing and Jack Wolfskin) still has a disadvantage of 3'20'' to Froome.
Froome is the first in the hill and extends his virtual lead.
Proni is second over the hill and Marzoli is third. These two riders seem to want to escape from the peloton.
Bertagnolli attacks and manage to join Proni and Marzoli.
Vandenbroeck also attacks. Polka dot jersey, Scarponi and Cavalli try to follow the Belgian.
Next to the beginning of the hill, Kirchen attacks! Fanfani tries to follow.
Kirchen catches and passes Proni. Fanfani is no man's land and will soon be absorved by the pack. The other intermediate riders were all caught.
More attacks in the pack! Gilbert attacks. Schumacher and Bertagnolli follow him.
Did you forget Froome? He is the first in the last hill. 13 km to the end. Can he make it?
Kirchen is 35 seconds behind.
Gilbert is third and Schumacher is alongside him. Proni and Bertagnolli are right behind them. 15 seconds for Kirchen.
48 seconds behind is the pack where Vandenbroeck is attacking again. The other attacking rider is Mancuso. Neither one of the two managed to get a gap on the peloton.
Froome is caught by Kirchen! They held an advantage of 30 seconds over the four chasers.
There is no cooperation in the chasing group, so Bertagnolli attacks! Gilbert and Schumacher counter.
They catch Kirchen and Froome. Schumacher has put in the strongest attack and starts the sprint with an advantage.
It will between Schumacher and Kirchen. Bertagnolli is in Gilbert's wheel and Gilbert made the clever choice of following a tired Froome.
They are side by side under the 1km marker!
Schumacher wins by a nail!
Gilbert takes the third place in front of Bertagnolli.
Amazing stage by Froome. He takes the fifth place. Proni is sixth in the front of pack lead by Jiriakov.
