Euskal Bizikleta - Stage 3
alexkr00
Another quite short stage, again less than 100 kilometers long. But this time the finish is an uphill one and it looks rather a mountain than a hilly one. Wegmann got the yellow jersey yesterday but today's climbs are longer and steeper than yesterday ones so he might have some difficulties keeping the jersey
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0001-22.jpg

The first intermediate sprint of the day was won by Gabrovski in front of Saldarriaga
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0003-19.jpg

Later Swada, Sineloboc, Costagli and Stybar joined them in the leading group
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0004-14.jpg

Saldarriaga was definitly the strongest climber in the group and he won the firsts climb of the day. He was followed by Costagli and Stybar at the summit
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0006-10.jpg

The first categorised climb of the day also made the first victims of the day as Swada and Sinelobov lost the contact with the leading group and they never got back in the group
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0007-11.jpg

The next objectiv for the escapes was the second and the last intermediate sprint of the day. If Saldarriaga was first on the climb as he was the strongest climber, Stybar took the sprint as he was the strongest sprinter in the group
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0008-7.jpg

In the pack it's clear that Wegmann is the yellow jersey wearer as his team - mates are doing the chase behind the breakaway group
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0011-7.jpg

Saldarriaga was second at the second summit of the day, but still enough to take the polka dot jersey. Costagli managed to beat him and he took the KoM points
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0018-5.jpg

But the news aren't good for the escapes as they were caught by 3 attackers from the pack: Nicacio, Alarcon and Moreno with the actual pack not far away either
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0020-7.jpg

And they were all 7 caught by the pack on the downhill
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0022-5.jpg

Right after that Tenorio tried to surprise everyone with an attack but it didn't last for too long
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0026-3.jpg

On the final climb there were no attacks untill the last 6 kilometers of the stage. Moreno was the first attacker
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0032-5.jpg

He was followed by the previous leader, Taaramae, who seems to want the yellow jersey back
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0039-3.jpg

A BMC rider is after them but it's not Wegmann as we don't the yellow jersey. It's Calzati, with Mercado right behind him
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0041-4.jpg

With 5 kilometers left Efimkin joined Moreno, Taaramae, Mercado and Calzati in the leading group
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0042-3.jpg

With 3 kilometers before the finish Wegmann made his move but it was too late and he only managed to catch Moreno, who was dropped from the leading group
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0046-2.jpg

The sprint starts with Efimkin leading the race, but the others, including Moreno, Wegmann and the pack aren't far away
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0053-3.jpg

A few moments before Wegmann and Moreno were together but now Wegmann is almost brought back in the pack, while Moreno looks like going to catch the front group
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0056-2.jpg

Efimkin is still leading inside the last kilometer but Mercado seems to be the fastest guy in front
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0060-1.jpg

Mercado takes with an easy acceleration the lead...
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0064-2.jpg

And it's Mercado who takes the win! This could have been his second stage win if he haven't messed up the sprint in the first stage
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0068-2.jpg

Not a good day for Wegmann as his group finished 40 seconds behind the winner. That means that Efimkin, second today, is the new yellow jersey of the race
