Tour of Belgium - Stage 5
CrueTrue
Fifth and last stage of Tour of Belgium is pretty much entirely flat, The mountain classification was decided yesterday with Terpstra taking most points on two of the three climbs. The GC is also pretty much closed unless something very surprising happens. So on this stage, there's the points jersey and a stage win to fight for.

Break of the day? 12 riders: Cioni, Zrimsek, Ortega, Cooper, Jeannesson, Timofeev, Nydam, Echarri, Barclay, Anderegg, Murray and Sambris. Cioni did for some reason want to work alone and was slightly after of the group for quite a while. And when he finally decided to drop back, he went straight through and couldn't keep up the pace - and therefore dropped. Well done, Cioni.

Fast-forward: 25 km to go, and the break is caught. Instead, the peloton started focusing on the intermediate sprint which was won by Napolitano who by that brings himself to a virtual 2nd place in the Points Classification. In the very same moment, several crashes happened in the peloton. First rider down was Korkotyan - but shortly after, bad news ticked in: Fourth-placed Vandenbroeck was down along with his team mate Jeremy Hunt. Also the Swedish Champion, currently 12th-place holder, Johansson went down. Also worth noting: Jeremy Hunt crashed again 1 km later.

In front, Napolitano apparently wanted an easy win. After the intermediate sprint, he decided to continue instead of dropping back. And when the sprint started with 2.5 km to go, he still had a nice gap of 33 seconds to the peloton. In front of it, you'd find Giaux, then Vengerling, Muravjev, Sutherland, Roulston, Gardeyn, Arvesen, ... - basically, one large, un-organized group of riders.

With 1 km to go, Giaux had sprinted away from the rest of the peloton, but still had 19 seconds to close to a non-sprinting Napolitano. Behind him, Casper had done a massive effort.
But nothing could change the fact that Napolitano made a smart move after the intermediate sprint - he takes not only the stage win, but also the points classification! 2nd is Giaux followed by Casper.

And Vandenbroeck? He can probably wave bye bye to his fourth place.

The replay shows that the Swede is to blame.
