Tour de Luxembourg - Stage 2
untal
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem2.jpg
Hilly-rated stage but all the classified hills are way too far from the finish. In addition to that all the ascent of this stage are not very long or very steep. Can we still expect attacks from the favourites?

Mancuso, Vandewalle, Priamo, Gonzalez Capilla, Scarponi and Fanfani attack right on the beginning of the stage.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem210.jpg

There is no fight for the mountain points. Scarponi takes the first place, Priamo takes the second and Vandewalle is third. The gap for the pack is 6'30''.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem211.jpg

110km to go and the break's maximum advantage is reached. 8'30'' that is. Wii Racing relays in the pack to secure Schumacher's yellow jersey.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem212.jpg

85km to the end and despite the hard chase performed by Wii Racing, four riders try to escape from the pack. They are: Appelby, Mazzanti, Pagoto and Sampaio.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem213.jpg

The next KOM is also non disputed. Mancuso passes at first, Vandewalle takes second and Scarponi is third. Break's advantage for the pack is 6 minutes. The four chasing riders have an advantage of a minute over the peleton.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem214.jpg

Jack Wolfskin and AON Global join the chase. 60km to go and still a minute to recover on the chasing group and four minutes on the early break.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem215.jpg

Gonzalez Capilla is the first in the last classified hill. Scarponi is second and he will wear the jersey tomorrow. Priamo takes third.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem216.jpg

At the same time, Caruso punctures. Seems there is no chance to be back in the peloton for him.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem217.jpg

And shortly after, the chase group is caught. 50km to go and 3 minutes and 30 seconds is the gap.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem218.jpg

For the intermediate sprint, there is actually a sprint between the group. Priamo takes it in front of Scarponi and Vandewalle. Less than 30km to go and the gap is 2'20.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem219.jpg

A few kilometers later, Ignatiev attacks alone.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem220.jpg

A little bit after, and realising the danger that the Russian represents, Gilbert, Schumacher, Kirchen attack. On the far side of the road, Stolz and Ben Nasser, Ignatiev's teammate, also attack.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem221.jpg

And Bertagnolli, Vandenbroeck, Marzoli, Martinez and (even) Castañeda also attack.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem222.jpg

But there are much more moves in the pack!

With 13km to go, the situation:
E1 (Martínez, Ben Nasser, Scarponi, Vandewalle and Fanfani).
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem223.jpg

+ 27'' - E2 (Marzoli, Priamo, Mancuso, Stolz and Gonzalez Capilla).
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem224.jpg

+ 20'' - E3 (Jeanesson, Schumacher).
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem225.jpg

+ 15'' - E4, a 16 riders group containing Ribeiro, in the front, Kirchen, who is attacking, Bertagnolli, Vandenbroeck, Reus, Ignatiev, Gilbert, amongst others.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem226.jpg

+ 58 '' - Peloton, lead by Benfica.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem227.jpg

But there is mayhem in the front groups and there are still plenty of attacks!

At 4 km to go, and after all the ascents, there is a six-man group (Martínez, Marzoli, Vandewalle, Kirchen, Schumacher and Proni) with a 28 seconds advantage over a group with 19 riders.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem228.jpg

Martínez and Marzoli are leading at 2km to go, but Schumacher is speeding up in the back.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem229.jpg

Under the banner, Martínez and Marzoli are side by side and the victory will be for one of them.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem230.jpg

Meanwhile, in the peloton, massive fall! De Maar and Albasini are the most notable names.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem231.jpg

Martínez is a better a sprint than the Italian and that is proven as he beats Marzoli! Kirchen takes the third place and will take the yellow jersey thanks to the bonifications.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem232.jpg

Gilbert is the first of the next group. He takes the seventh place but the group might lose time to the stage's leading six.
i707.photobucket.com/albums/ww77/untal16/LuxembourgManGame/Luxem233.jpg

Will there be any time gaps between the two groups?

Spoiler

No! Gilbert's sprint cut all the time gaps, in the opinion of the judges.
