Third stage of Tour of Belgium is likely to be the decider - a 14.4 km long time trial,
Of the 'early riders' - those who set a good time, but doesn't stand a chance of winning neither the stage nor the overall GC - Perry from the Ernst & Young team was the first to impress. He did the route in 18'45.
He was later overtaken by Tenorio from the Santander team, and from this moment on, new best times were being set pretty much with every rider coming in. That 'ended' with Bradley Wiggins' time of 18'07, 10 seconds better than Kiryenka, who at the time was placed 2nd.
Unfortunately for Wiggins, he hadn't managed to stay in the front group on the 2nd stage and was therefore out of the picture for the overall GC. One of the first notable GC riders was Leif Hoste. He did well and managed to place himself fourth, 18 seconds after Wiggins.
Many tend to see Kessler as one of the favourites for the overall GC. On this stage, he didn't manage to do better than Hoste, though. Instead, he took a (preliminary) 14th, 18 seconds after Hoste and 36 after Wiggins, who was still in the lead with 17 riders to go.
With surprisingly few good time trialists in the race, Wiggins managed to secure the win of this stage while Hoste managed to be the best of the GC candidates.
Ciolek fought, but this was definitely his last day in the lead of the race.
