The 2nd stage of Tour of Belgium has some Flandern-like hills midway on the route - but the question is whether they'll have any impact at all. We'll see.
A reasonable group of riders got away during the first kilometres: Arvesen, Echarri, Barclay, Bahati, Ratti, Zrimsek, Lloyd, Kuchinski and Stoltz. Ratti is good on hills while Kuchinski is good on cobblestones - but none of them riders are good on both terrains.
Despite a high pace in the peloton to reel in the escapees, a few riders decided to try their luck with 90 km to go: Rojas Gil, Roulston and Rollin attacked. Rojas Gil got a large gap while both Roulston and Rollin had trouble keeping up. Perhaps, this is Sony's way of signalling that they expect to do something on this stage?
In the front group, Bahati, expectedly, had problems keeping up and was eventually dropped. And behind, Rollin and Roulston had been caught by the chasing Lego riders.
With 70 km to go, the front riders reached the first cobbled hill with a gap of c. 3'20 minutes. And in the same moment, Rojas Gil managed to bridge the gap. And not only did he do that - he went straight to the front and upped the pace in the group, causing damage to the group. Only Kuchinski managed to stay on his wheel with Arvesen following shortly after.
Behind them, in the peloton, the two hills did have an effect. The peloton broke into two: 43 riders in P, 52 in the A1 and with several other smaller groups behind the 'losing' peloton. Caught behind were Casper, Farrar, D'Amore and many other good riders. Ciolek, though, had managed to keep himself at the front.
So, with 35 km to go, the peloton still had a gap of two minutes to catch.
Behind, the riders of the 2nd peloton were cooperating really well - but when Molteni upped the pace, they were chanceless - and so were the many riders who could still feel the cobbled hills. Many riders had trouble keeping up, and even Ciolek was in trouble.
With 6 km to go, Rojas and Kuchinski were still at the front, but the peloton didn't seem to care much as they started setting up the sprint. With 3 km to go, it was over for the two - they were close, but that's just not enough. Instead, the sprint is going to be between Schreck, Gardeyn, Frischkorn, Meersman, Usov, Blythe - and not Ciolek. He's in the group, but is too tired.
With 1 km to go, it was surprisingly Meersman in front ahead of Steurs and Portal. Blythe is there too. Please notice that all three are reasonable cobble riders - so they did indeed have an impact.
It's extremely close! Blythe or Meersman? Steurs takes third.
