The Vuelta organizers had something with short stages when making the route, because today is again only 150km. And again, there are a few hills (between kilometer 100 and 125) which may well tire out some of the sprinters. They have one more chance before we have the tme trial tomorrow to get the GC guys going.
The first attack of the day includes not only the current KOM leader Talabardon, but also the current white jersey holder for the best young rider; Vitoria.
As they get away with Schar, Khatuntsev and Steensen La Gazetta chases the rest, until another groupe gets away and bridge the gap; Geslin, Ongarato, Sys, Chtioui, Kern and Erviti.
As Geslin takes the sprint, another wave of attacks started, making the pack go into chaso mode again; 36km done, and still no break of the day.
And with only 100km left to do, the 17 men lead groupe is neutralized; everything is back to where we started this morning.
Or is it??? The pack seems to have stopped the chase at the point where they had practically caugth them, and now the groupe is gaining time again!
And as Di Gregorio crashes without any big problems on first sight, the groupe indeeds gets away. These are the 17 names: Schar(Rabobank), Khatuntsev(Lipton), Steensen, Christensen(B&O), Geslin(Festina), Ongarato, Talabardon(Warner Brothers), Sys, Herrero Llorente(Wikipedia), Chtioui(Accumalux), Kern, Lund(Phillips), Erviti(American Susuki), Martins(Benfica), Sestili(Credit Lyonnais), Vitoria(SIC Radical) and Mouris(British Airways).
And as Herrero Llorenta wins sprint 2, La Gazetta with a little help from Domina, Eurosport and Unicef make sure the gap doesnt get too big: with a large groupe it's always a risk.
On the first hill, Talabardon attacks to take the points as the groupe still stays together. You can wonder why though, since the pack is closing in fast now under the hard pace of la Gazzetta. The gap is down to 2'30 as Brea is the first sprinter to be dropped - more to follow soon?
As Talabardon comes late for the second KOM(taking third) the first riders are finally dropped: Ongarato and Mouris with Khatuntsev and Erviti in trouble as well.
And with Yannick digging deep for the final KOM sprint, the peloton is now closing in fast. with 25km left the break doesn't seem to have any chances.
Geslin, Kern, Steensen and Chtioui realize this and leave their compagnions.
But with only 5km left, the pack seems to have miscalculated as Marinangeli and Bonnet (both tired from the hills and Marinangeli from relaying all day) have to lead the trains in the chase...
Kern then manages a small gap to Steensen, Geslin and Chtioui,
Bonnet leads Bozic Weylandt and Florencia as Marinangeli is a little weaker with Bennati, Roelandts, Cavendish and Rizza. Kern now has 2.1km left, the pack still needs to do 2.7km - they're waiting a little while they should know any hesitation will cost them the stage...
As the sprinters in the pack (except Bennati) finally start, Kern seems safe. The other three are still next to eachother though. The pack migth get them, but if not, it's gonna be close for second!
Here come Roelandts and Bozic.
Kern has time enough to celebrate, he's done a very good job today!
Roelandts takes second in front of Weylandt. Bennati made a big mistake when keeping to follow Marinangeli - will this cost him the jersey?
But no, it doesnt. Roelandts comes 5 seconds short, as Kern was already over 2 minutes behind. Roelandts now does come very close in the points classification as well though.
