Dutch Food Valley Classic

Dutch Food Valley Classic

There are lots of top quality sprinters here, but that doesn't put off a flurry of riders attacking over the opening kilometers.

The break that finally sticks in the opening stages contains 5 riders - Stewart, Neves, Passalacqua, Ciccarese and Nilsson. There are 180k to race and the lead is up to nearly 3 minutes.

Wiggle, IrnBru and Sony Ericsson come to the front of the pack and ride tempo to make sure the lead doesn't go out too far. 150k to the finish and the lead five are at 5'38".

At the 100k to go point, the lead is out to 8'20 and the same three teams are at the front back in the pack.

It's around this stage that the chase starts to pick up speed. At the 90k to mark the lead is down to just over 7 minutes.

At 80k the lead is just under 6 minutes. At 70k it is just over 3'30 and the break looks to have very little chance of making it through to the finish.

60k to go - the leaders have 3'07" on the chasing pack. The pace has eased slightly in the chase, and Paolini from Kenda is the first one to try and ride away from the pack.

Behind him, Rowe (Wiggle), Vermeltfoort (NOS) and Rooijakkers (Lego) come after. They open up a fair gap, and Rooijakkers is the one who looks the strongest from this group.

Wiggle have dropped off the front of the peloton and it is now up to Irn Bru and Sony to continue with the chase. With 50k to go, the day's original escapees still have over a minute on the four chasers in E2, with the pack a further 50 seconds back.

Meanwhile, M+M and Lego have moved up to assist in the chase. There is still life in the original break though and with just under 35k to the finish, they all dig deep again.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/dv_05.jpg

With 30k to go they have 55" on the second group, who have 41" on the pack. A sprint may be on the cards, but it's windy and a little hilly, so there is still a chance for the escapees.

23k to go, and as the second group are bridging up to the first group, Starbucks man Ciccarese puts in another dig.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/dv_06.jpg

It's a valiant attempt, but with the main pack now travelling at high speed it is a doomed move. Still, with just over 15k to go, Ciccarese can say he is the last of the riders who tried their luck today to be caught.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/dv_07.jpg

It seems today is going to be a sprint. M+M, Lego, Sony and IrnBru keep the pace high enough to discourage attacks. Under the 5k to go banner and the jockeying for position has well and truly started.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/dv_08.jpg

3k to go and Nazon on the left and Van Avermaet on the right are in good position behind their lead out men. Strangely, Haedo is in the lead out position for BMC with French team mate Sinner behind him.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/dv_09.jpg

Just over 2k to go and Van Avermaet has come through. Cabrera, the Cuban champion, is on his wheel. Over the other side of the road Haedo is sweeping past Nazon, who remains behind his lead out.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/dv_10.jpg

1.5k and Nazon is out of it. If BMC man Sinner can come through then it looks good for the American team.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/dv_11.jpg

He can't though, and with Van Avermaet having gone a tad early, Cabrebra makes a move to try and finish off a hard day's work for his team as we come under the 1k banner.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/dv_12.jpg

500m to go and the Cuban is surely going to win.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/dv_13.jpg

Van Avermaet is fading and Mohs is not strong enough to come around even him, so Cabrera has no trouble in delivering a well deserved victory for the Sony Ericsson team.

i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/fenian_12345/dv_14.jpg

Van Avermaet holds on for second, with Mohs rounding out the podium.

Ciolek is 4th, Van Heerden 5th, Vaitkus 6th, Haedo 7th, Nazon 8th, hapless failure Sinner 9th and Ventoso 10th.
