Stage 4 is the first hilly stage of the race. It has around 160km and 13 laps. No one will win the race today but some may lose it right now. Ghisalberti is the main favourite for the win today but can he prove the bookies right?
In the second lap, the attacks start. Raisin, Longo Borghini, Stetina, Vasquez, Zandio, Hicks, Sampaio, Médici, Sawada, Weissinger and Li try to escape from the pack on the hill.
At the next passage at the finishing mark, here's the situation:
E1 (Zandio, Sampaio, Stetina, Vasquez and Longo Borghini).
At +48'' is E2 (Hicks, Raisin and Médici).
At +41'' is E3 (Weissinger, Li and Sawada). The pack is 32 seconds after.
The next passage at the hill is right away and E2 and E3 join together. Bru Pascal and Boonratanathanakorn attack.
All of the attacking riders are now at the front, on the descent, so the breakaway of the day seems to be formed. Only Hicks is not there, as he couldn't hold on on the hill, thus getting caught by the pack.
Fall! And it's Bru Pascal, a rider who was at the front.
At 100km to the end, the 11 riders have an advantage of 3'19'' to Bru Pascal and 4'40'' to the bunch.
15 km later and another attack! Grabovski, Kirsch and Donald try to escape from the pack.
Shortly after, Bru Pascal is caught by the pack leaded by Vespa, BMC and Sony Ericsson.
At 80 km to go:
E1 (11 early breakaway riders)
+ 3'01'' - E2 (Grabovski)
+ 51'' - E3 (Kirsch and Donald)
+1'22'' - P
20km later, Kirsch and Donald are caught. Grabovski and the early breakaway riders are at 1'29'' and 1'33'', respectively.
45km left and Grabovski catches the leading group. But the escape seems to be doomed as they only have an advantage of 2 minutes.
This hill caused a split in the front group. Longo Borghini, Weissinger, Zandio and Sampaio lead the race.
Eight of the breakaway riders are now caught by the pack. But, the leading four are still up on the road.
The advantage is not decreasing. 1'20'' at 22km to go.
At the same time, attacks in the pack! Gutiérrez Palacios, Lloret, Stalder, Eisel and Keisse are the attackers.
And so do Basso, Moreno and Ghisalberti. Zaini, Hoffman and Scholz also do it, but a bit later.
Down the hill, the situation:
E1 (Lloret, Ghisalberti, Gutiérrez Palacios, Longo Borghini, Stalder and Weissinger).
+ 35'' - E2 (Basso, Zaini and Moreno).
+ 26'' - E3 (Keisse, Eisel, Zandio, Hoffman and Sampaio). The pack is closing in, though.
Right up next, the third group is really caught but Zandio, somehow, thinks it's useful to resist by 500m.
10km to go and Calzati and Valjavec finally attack. Later, Hoffman tries to attack again.
Lloret has the same idea and attacks the leading group!
Ghisalberti tries to bridge the gap, but Lloret helds a small advantage over him. Entering the downhill, Calzati, Basso, Gutiérrez Palacios, Valjavec and Stalder are chasing. Hoffman and Moreno seem to be dropped at the top. 7km to go.
2km to go and Lloret is 20 seconds in front of Ghisalberti.
+ 52'' - E2 (Calzati, Basso, Gutiérrez Palacios, Valjavec and Stalder).
+ 32'' - E3 (Moreno and Hoffman).
+ 52'' - E4 (Weissinger and Zaini).
+ 24'' - Peloton.
Meanwhile, Lloret crosses the line. A surprising victory! He will probably take the yellow jersey.
Ghisalberti is second but he may be disappointed as he was the big favourite for today.
Basso wins the sprint for third place, as the group catches some late riders.
Hoffman takes the 8º place ahead of Moreno.
Weissinger rounds the top 10, as he sprints better than Zaini, despite of being in the early break. Jacques-Maynes is the first of the pack.
When you think you can't be more unlucky, you should think twice. After a puncture and a fall, Li falls again.
