Last stage that could make a real change to the general classification. After 2 high mountains we have a pretty long downhill and again a small uphill section to end the stage. Ricco has a great chance to take his third stage win so it will be very hard for Gesink or any other of his opponents to take the yellow jersey away from him.
Visconti won the first intermediate sprint in front of Stenerson and Dowsett. Gavazzi, Popov and Pederson were also in the leading group.
White Bear and Rabobank are leading the chase behind the escapes so we should see an another fight between Ricco and Gesink
As soon as the front group reached the first climb of the day Pedersen and Stenerson were dropped from the group
Behind Ardila, Marzano and Lovkvist attacked and managed to get away pretty easily
After an while they joined the breakaway group
Ardila took the lead of the group and only Popov was able to keep it up from the escapes
In the last kilometer of the climb Ardila and Marzano got away being the first riders at the summit
Lovkvist left Popov somewhere on the road and he is third at the top. Still it doesn’t look like he will get back in Ardila and Marzano’s group
Pluchkin and Lopez Garcia attacked at the top of the climb and continued it on the downhill and they caught Popov
Few moments later they were joined by Sinkewitz, Niemic and Cataldo. Lovkvist isn’t far away and he is about to be caught
When they reached the second climb of the day Pluchkin attacked. Ardila and Marzano started to be a real threat
Gesink and other big names also attacked. But they did it from the pack in order to catch the chasing group
Meanwhile in front, Marzano can’t keep it up with Ardila and the Columbia leaves him behind
Ardila is first at the summit. Now it’s a long downhill for him until the final small uphill section
Marzano is second there but he already lost 30 seconds to Ardila
Pluchkin is third at the top, 45 seconds behind Marzano
Lovkvist leads the fourth group where we also have Gesink, Ricco, Cataldo, Niemic, Lopez Garcia and Sinkewitz
In the fifth group we have Danielson, Kohl, Rodrigues, Zabriskie and Sastre but they are a little bit too far to count for today’s stage
Pluchkin is clearly faster than Marzano on the downhill and after a few kilometers he catches the Unicef rider
Behind them Danielson left his group to join Gesink and Ricco’s group
That’s the fastest group at the moment and they caught Pluchkin and Marzano, when the road started to be rather a flat one than a downhill
Still not everyone in that group is able to join them, only Niemic, Gesink and Ricco
With 5 kilometres left Ardila is almost caught by the Niemic, Gesink, Pluchkin, Ricco, Marzano group
The Columbian seems able to hang on but Ricco and Pluchkin attacked and they caught him
Gesink also joins the new leading group
And they start together the final uphill but it doesn’t look too good for Ardial as he is the most tired from all four
Ricco leads the sprint followed by Gesink. It’s going to be between them for the stage win. But the other groups aren’t far away so they won’t win a lot of time today
Gesink looks stronger than Ricco and he takes the lead with 500m left
Gesink gets it. Ricco is second, same time as the best young rider of the tour
Pluchkin and Ardila were caught by Danielson and Sinkewitz. Pluchkin leads the group, 18 seconds behind Gesink
Marzano finishes on the 7th place, 1 minute and a few seconds behind Gesink
Zabriskie leads a 6 men group, 1 minute and 24 seconds behind the winner
Gesink won only a few bonification seconds there so Ricco has no problems keepin his yellow jersey
The only jersey wearer that changed is the polka dot one. Visconti won a few points on the first climb, but it was enough to take the KoM jersey from Gautier
