Vuelta a España - Stage 2

Today is the first normal stage of the Vuelta. It's only a short stage, but since it's not completely flat towards the end, it may still causes some problems to the less gifted climbers among the sprinters. Also, today has one KOM sprint, so the jersey will get a wearer for tomorrow.
Undoubtably, Bennati is the favourite for the win, as his main challengers seem to be Cavendish and Roelandts.

The stage has barely started as Kern is off already.

As more attacks follow, the chase is on. One of the chasers - Vila - isn't lucky though, as he crashes after just 9.8km on the second stage of a 21 day race...

Disaster for Credit Lyonnais as well, since their leader - Abal - is one of the two riders crashing over Vila, with Offredo being the other. The pace is quite high in the chase after the attackers, so let's hope for Abal he'll get back on the bike soon enough!

As Sys takes the first intermediate sprint ahead of Joseph and Costa (With Mouris a little behind), only Lalouette waited for Abal as they remain +- 2'30 behind the pack for a while, together with Vila, as Offredo missed out and is alone.

More teamleader disaster: Marchante punctures!
Together with teammate Reynes, they join the Abal groupe.

As the pack has finally setteld, Reynes manages to get Marchante back fairly soon, as Lalouette has to let a gap and must chase for a minute longer before finally catching up as well. Offredo is still 4 minutes behind the pack though and seems less lucky. Will he make it to the finish in time?

As Talabardon attacks away from Costa to take the first KOM jersey, they hold a 4'45 gap to the pack. There's quite some other riders on the attack as well, who where all unable to keep up on the hill; Sestili, Perget, Sys, Gerard - Joseph - Steensen, Chritensen, Navardauskas, Ongarato - and Mouris. Gaps? In minutes: 1 - 1'30 - 2 - 2'50.

Only the first groupe would eventually catch up with Talabardon and Costa tough, as Costa takes the other intermediate sprint of the day. Not that is matters anyway, because mainly Virgin (and later La Gazetta) keep the break within 5 minutes at all times.
However, Sys has now taken a total of 10 bonification seconds, and since he is only 7 seconds behind on Ford after yesterdays TTT, he only has to keep up with the pack when they're caugth to take the jersey, right?
Yes - but he has trouble doing so with the high pace...

Then; antoher crash! This time, Brizuela, Steensen and Kaggestad and the unlucky ones. At least no team leaders this time!
No much later, Sobota goes down too.

With 6km left, the trains are setting up. Left: Geslin with Brea, right: Ceathoven with Brown, and in the middle Marinangeli with Bennati, Cavendish and Roelandts.
Meanwhile, Sys is dropped and Klostergaard and Martin are another two riders that crashed on day 2…

With 3km left, Ceathoven and Brown take a small lead as the Credit Lyonnais guys, as well as the B&O guys, are fianlly setting up a train as well.

Brown has trouble with the uphill (5%!) sprint though, and cant follow his leadout man! Now the Gazetta train seems to be the strongest. Not suprizingly, it has the three best sprinters around in it.

As Bennati starts his sprint, Caethoven has already built up a small lead going into the final kilometer.

But Caethoven is no match at all for Bennati as he drops Roelandts right out of his wheel!

And Bennati finishes it off with ease, with Roelandts taking second and Cavendish managing third. That third place is enough for him to take the jersey with 2 second though!

As Offredo doenst manage to finish inside the timelimit, Navardauskas has given up as well - presumably due to injuries?
