It's time for the second Gran Tour of the season to kick off: the Vuelta a Espagna. With a strong field present for the GC, the prologue is already a good indication to see which team may and which may not be strong enough, if they get the jersey to defend it.
As it looks like Virgin has brought a team here, especially made for this opening team time trial, they are the obvious favourites. But, any team with riders strong enough to pull out an 8km sprint may very well challenge them.

Eurosport gets the honour the be the first team off the starting platform. Lead by Lagutin they storm into Granada and set the first time of the day: 9'19

After them it's Credit Lyonnais who's up first to challenge Eurosports time... and ... they beat it by 1 second!

Rabobank as well is looking to beat the time, but they only take third; 2 seconds down.

Next is Domina Vacanze, lead by Schleck himself. He does what he can, but it's not enough; 7 seconds slower then Eurosport.

American Suzuki then do even worse: +'13

Meanwhile, Virgin has come one second short on the check - equal to Credit Lyonnais, but at the finish, they beat Eurosports time by 3 seconds!

Warner Brothers is the only team with just 8 riders here, so it may be no suprize they clock the slowest time: + '32

Lipton then comes in, not coming close to the top times either: +'12

But as Virgin has now reached the finish, we’ve got a now best time! They beat Eurosports time by 2 seconds!

Then it's the turn of La Gazetta. After their win in the opening TTT in the Giro, their team here isnt nearly as strong; +'20. With the bonifications next few days, Bennati migth have a good shot at the jersey though.

Festina then comes in, equaling Domina Vacanze's time, 11 seconds slower then Virgin.

As national time trial champions Stundia and Kvasina lead home Accumalux, they haven't lived up to the expectations either: +7 seconds.

Unicef come in provisional 9th; +'14

Next, Philips don't do much better either: 11th, 17 seconds down.

White Bear is the first team to come close again on the check, but +'11 in the end probably means they started too fast...

Uran, determined to go for a podium spot, leads Wikipedia through the final kilometer; and he has succes; a provisional second place, only 2 seconds slower then Virgin!

British Airways dissapoints a little, going 15th at 17 seconds.

SIC Radical does much better +'4 seconds. It's only enough for 5th so far though.

Wildcart Benfica does what you could expect; mid field, 11th at 11 seconds.

As B&O is off last they set a good time at the check point: +'1 to the leaders there, but they are Eurosport. Virgin was +'1 at the check as well... it will come down to the final kilomters between Virgin and B&O!

But their best time trialist have obviously done their job already in the first part, as they only manage 8th at the finsih, 9 seconds down.

So, the Vuelta has started. Virgin made true their favourites role, as they go into tomorrows stage with William Ford holding the Amarillo jersey for them.
