Tour de Georgia - Stage 1
alexkr00
First stage of the tour and it is a long flat one. The sprinters are the favourites but the strong wind could change that. On paper Davis, Vantomme and Cooke are the riders to watch but there are a lot of good sprinters that could take the win today.
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0001-13.jpg

There were 12 riders in today’s breakaway. 11 of them rode together in the first group: Mugerli, De Jongh, Nooytens, Gautier, Smukulis, Pate, Visconti, Van de Walle, Lefevre, Manarelli and Gretsch.
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0003-12.jpg

Clayes was the 12th escape but he never managed to join the front group and had a solo race between the first group and the pack
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0004-8.jpg

Rabobank, White Bear and B&O had no riders in the breakaway and they were the main chasers of the escapes never letting them have more than 7 minutes advantage
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0007-6.jpg

There were no climbs today so no KoM points to fight for, just one intermediate sprint. It was quite a close battle between Manarelli and Gretsch, but Virgin Media rider got the first position there. De Jongh took the third place on the podium
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0009-8.jpg

With 60km to go Sijmens had a puncture and he doesn’t seems able to come back into the pack
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0010-5.jpg

So far Clayes rode almost the whole stage all by himself and now he is getting tired, almost being caught by the pack with 50 km left. The other escapes still have 3 minutes advantage over the pack
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0011-4.jpg

But with 30 kilometres to go the advantage gone to less than a minute and 5 riders tried to get rid of the other escapes: De Jongh, Pate, Smukulis, Van de Walle and Lefevre.
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0017-4.jpg

The other six weren’t able to keep it up and they were caught by the pack
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0021-1.jpg

The 5 attackers aren’t too far away either as the pack is right behind the corner
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0024-1.jpg

And with 20 km left to ride the breakaway ended
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0028-1.jpg

The preparations for the mass sprint started with 9 to go. Vaugrenard tried to find the best position there for his leader, Alan Davis. Vantomme and Cooke also got in their slipstream
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0029-2.jpg

SIC Radical are also coming there, as Leezer is leading – out Sebastien Chavanel
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0031-1.jpg

Domino are coming on the other side of the road, as Wyss is trying to put Chicchi in the best position he can. Also Vantomme has a rider there to help him, it’s Pedersen
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0033-2.jpg

When the sprint started Suzuki were gone from the front and SIC Radical have a clear lead in front of Domina Vacanze
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0035-2.jpg

Also 2 Warner Brothers’ riders are coming really fast, Facci and Van Hummel, being even faster than the Domina train at the moment
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0037-2.jpg

Behind the battle for the stage win was a crash caused by Mugerli. Ulissi, Sinkewitz and Kolesnikov were the most important names caught there
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0039-2.jpg

Meanwhile in front Leezer had done his job, now it’s up for Chavanel to do his if he wants to take the stage win
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0041-1.jpg

Even though they are 2 the Warner Brothers riders don’t look able to beat him today. His only real opponents are now Chicchi and Loddo but the Italian riders have a few metres to gain if they want to do something today
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0043-1.jpg

Chavanel enters the last corner with a pretty nice advantage over his rivals
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0045.jpg

So it looks like Van Hummel, Chicchi and Loddo will fight only for the second spot, behind Chavanel
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0047-1.jpg

The French sprinter started celebrating quite early and that could cost him as Loddo has a good speed in the last metres
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0049.jpg

But it didn’t and Chavanel takes the win for SIC Radical. Loddo took only the second place, while Van Hummel managed to hang on in front of Chicchi for the third spot
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0051.jpg

Another good news for SIC Radical is that Sinkewitz didn’t lose any time. Of course it would have been better if he hadn’t crashed at all
i809.photobucket.com/albums/zz14/alexkr00_rab2/PCM0053.jpg

The sad news is that Ulissi was injured in that crash and he won’t be able to continue the race
