Today’s 181km’s are the last flat ones before it’s hill country tomorrow. One more chance for the sprinters to show off their skills.
In the early break, Gallego Martin takes two intermediate sprints as Ghyselinck, Ratto, Perez Arango, Vingerling, Stoltz and van Ooien join him today.
As the groupes lead peaks at 8 minutes, 100%ME starts to chase defending the jellow jersey, presumably before losing it on tomorrows stage. But before tomorrow, there’s still some KOM points on offer today as well, as van Ooien beats Stoltz to them.
And he does the same on the other hill, as their lead is already cut down to just 3 minutes, with still 60km left.
Attention now, there’s attacks in the peloton; O’Grady, Muravjev, Boucher and Fahnert are off!
As Muravjev catches van Ooien (who’s been dropped right after the hill), he’s closely behind on the break, ’40 ahead of the other three attackers and another ’40 to the pack.
But het hen makes a mistake in letting van Ooien relay, resulting in the chaser joining up soon, with the pack not far away.
A little while later, they do join up with the original break though, with a lead of 1’40 to the pack. There’s still 50km left though, as Muravjev has taken the final sprint.
The groupe doesnt get themselves organized though, so they are all caugth with 17km left; let’s sprint again!
Team Ultimate is having another bad day, as 6 men drop back to help Stoltz after his hard day in the break…
Up front, the race to the sprint is on, although there isn’t any train up front yet with only 3.5km left.
That situation has changed completely soon though, as Sony Ericsson hits the front with three men! Grillo, Bazavjev and Granjel Cabreira have big plans.
Kennaugh and van Heerden are not far back, as they will most likely be battleing for the jersey.
Heading into the final kilometer, the Sony guys are still up front and looking good, although Bongiorno, Napolitano, van Heerden and Westling are ready to takeover the front line.
The finish is closing in fast now, as Bazavjev turn out Sony’s best man with Westling right on his tail and Casper steaming up on the left side.
But it’s Bazavjev who finishes off this great Sony Ericsson show! Casper manages second as Wesling, aka ‘Wheelsucker’, takes third.
As van Heerden doesn’t take any boni seconds, Kennaugh can have the jersey one more day, before most likely losing it tomorrow.
