Another, 204km, flat stage. Very well suited to the sprinters, so Kennaugh should be able to defend his jersey to wear it another day.
Into the stage, the attackers wait a little, so the first sprint is up for grabs; and a lot of riders are interested. Although Galdos had a good lead, he lost speed and in the end Granjel Cabreira and Westling manage to pass him.
Shortly after, the attacks come. And it’s the first wave that gets away: Sutherland, Cooper and Fuglsang – Simunek – Timofeev, Echarri and Harvey make up todays three attack groupes.
Galdos then has a puncture, and even before the support car reached him again after giving him a new wheel, another rider is already waiting: Ghyselinck. Noone Waits for them, but they return with no problems.
As Cooper wins the second sprint, Simunek was very close to catch up, but he won’t make it, and nor would the other three chasers. Meanwhile, 100%ME leads the pack at almost 9 minutes.
Then, for about 100km, not a lot happends. Fuglsang takes both an intermediate and a KOM sprint, and the pack steadily reduces the gap. And with still 30km to go, the break is already caugth; this leaves a KOM sprint up for grabs.
Suprizingly, Freire attacks to take it, rather then saving his energy for the sprint which is coming up.
As the wind stretches the pack, Ljungblad tries his luck and attacks, but a descent gets in his way…
But then, a split in the pack! Westling, Visconti, Schumacher, Ginanni, Roche, Anza, Bazajev, Gil and Albasini are just some of the team leader caugth in the second groupe.
The gap is not big though, and they remake contact soon. No GC hopes lost!
Up front though, the wind is having an impact as well, as Duque has a small gap to 7 riders wo have a gap just as small to the pack.
But Duque is going good, and with 3km lef the has increased his gap. Behind him, Forster, Casper, van Heerden, Kennaugh and Stybar Chase, as do Galdos – Bongiorno and Grillo – Granjel Cabreira a little further back.
Less then 2km left, and Duque still has his gap, although van Heerden and Kennaugh have now really speeded up.
And they quickly close the gap!
And it’s van Heerden who keeps going and doesnt give Kennaugh any chance to get close! His second place is enough though to secure the jersey to wear it another day.
Behind them, Bongiorno takes 4th as Freire seems to have paid the prize for the KOM sprint, coming in 5th.
Looking at the podiums, there is a little suprize; the Control Team is now in the lead of the teams classification! All other teams; start to be ashamed!
