How to win a Mountain Stage
Rule 1: Never ever allow a good climber to take a lead of over 20 minutes in a mountain stage...
John Gadret went ona brave solo attack today, and during the climb upo the Galibier, his lead over the peleton was over 20 minutes!
The peleton were already beginning to chase, down to just 36 men so early on in the stage. But even so, Gadret was descending the small climb of the Telegraphe, before anyone else had even started it.
90km later, is Gadret caught yet? Nope.
The chasing group is down to 8: Gil, Schleck, Cunego, Valverde, Moreau, Dekker, Contador and Leipheimer. But the gap is still quite big.
After the next climb it was La Toussiere, and things soon split up in the chase.
Valverde + Leipheimer < Contador + Cunego < Schleck, Moreau and Perez Sanchez (Where did he come from?!) < Dekker + Gil.
The Schleck and Dekker groups merged together, while up front Leipheimer moved away from Valverde. This was a false move though, as Leipheimer cracked and fell back to the Contador/Cunego group.
Now came the moment that frenchmen and any impartial supporters has been dreading:
Gadret is caught, leaving Valverde free to win:
