Thanks.
Luckily he had the option of racing this way after the first stage. If Boswell hadn't lost so much time already, he could've been a tough adversary. Pfft

i.imgur.com/jJHYgn3.png
It took a while for a breakaway to be established. Lander, Wackermann and Conti teamed up before the first cat. 3 climb. Our very own Diego Ochoa, wearing the blue mountain jersey, joined the three a little later.
i.imgur.com/WZTw9CQ.png
Dozens of kilometers later, Conti was the strongest on the steeper next climb. Lander completely collapsed, Wackermann and Ochoa came 50" behind Conti at the top. The latter got enough points to keep his jersey.
i.imgur.com/6oLofAE.png
Ochoa intented to give the pursuit a try in the descent, but he'd give up when a certain Italian kept sitting in his wheel and denied him any help.
i.imgur.com/hLNOHMm.png
Conti tackled the uncategorised climb to Matera with a 52" advantage...
i.imgur.com/MZjGI1P.png
The Italian was reeled in by Izagirre, who'd slightly distanced the pack. Only race favorite Quintana followed, but refused to collaborate as well.
i.imgur.com/kl0kl5D.png
Their move stranded in the penultimate km, when the sprinters flew by.
i.imgur.com/6Dw1KVB.png
All of them were overruled by Miguel Ángel 'Superman' López, including Fernando Gaviria. Statement to his fellow overall standings contenders.

Keeping the American Dream alive?
i.imgur.com/ktT4Ltr.png
A vast, twelve-man breakaway took off before the first climb. The most threatening rider was about half an hour down in the GC standings thus the peloton within the bunch was extremely slow from that moment on.
i.imgur.com/tZp9rH5.png
The breakaway group was torn apart in the last, steep kilometers of the category 1 Gold Hill climb. The less-known riders Luigi Miletta (Androni) and Rick van Breda (Hincapie) seemed the strongest of the front group.
i.imgur.com/BlcNaXt.png
Robert Bush (Jelly Belly) came back in the descent. The trio started the HC Mount Rose climb with 2' to the next group and 6'20" to the peloton. The climb is 25.9 kilometers in length but has an average of only 5.2%.
i.imgur.com/zpVuHMn.png
In the pack Ian Boswell reacted to an earlier attack of Tim Roe. At first Larry Warbasse wanted to go with the American but would blow up way too early. Race leader Vandenborre decided not to follow immediately.
i.imgur.com/T9UUemo.png
Boswell caught up with Roe 5 kms from the top. Just around the corner Vandenborre was trying to bridge too as he still sat 47" down on them.
i.imgur.com/Ht131Ps.png
In the meantime Miletta and van Breda had got rid of Bush once more, quite like this very country did back in 2009. Three kilometers from the summit the two conserved an extensive advantage, of more than 4'30".
i.imgur.com/ekVtZKU.png
Near the top Vandenborre finally joined Roe. Ian Boswell however had left the Australian behind. Our man could not catch his breath downhill.
i.imgur.com/9xIcdjT.png
Miletta distanced van Breda in the descent, and the Dutchman could not make up the lost seconds on the last climb to Tyrolian Village anymore.
i.imgur.com/wrPrsLo.png
Both barely managed to finish ahead of Boswell, but Miletta took a well-deserved win and the provisional lead in the mountain standings on top of that. Ian Boswell eventually crossed the line 30" down on the winner.
i.imgur.com/wyeYVyM.png
About a minute later Roe shamelessly attacked Sam after having spent kms in his wheel. Roe gained 10", but Vandenborre also extended the gap to his closest rival, BMC's Frédéric Briganti, by another 20 seconds.

Great stage, Boswell got a bit closer but with a gap of 9'40" looks safe.

Not the easiest day at all, though given the circumstances the time loss is not that bad. Wink

The Fight for Pink
i.imgur.com/oQeOD2h.png
This short and mostly flat sprinter stage would bring us to Margherita di Savoia. Three riders were up for a day along the Adriatic coast: Davide Villella, Lukasz Wisniowski and ex-Russian champion Alexander Porsev.
i.imgur.com/RHMPYNB.png
Their journey came too an end 3 kms from the line. IAM Cycling was in the best place to perform the leadout for their lead sprinter Elia Viviani.
i.imgur.com/ZLQlN0f.png
Our train tried its best to keep up but we were pushed towards the side of the road. This way we're forced to watch the real sprint from behind.
i.imgur.com/1azxEUs.png
While Tinajero finished in 10th, Maglia Rossa Fernando Gaviria narrowly beat a surprisingly strong Tom Veelers for a first ever GT stage victory.

Sprint result could've been better but a top 10 finish is never bad. Wink

Tamijo: Izagirre's racing well but most of the differences have been created by the TTT. He's currently camping just outside the top 10. Smile

Stage 7/21, 157.7 kms
i.imgur.com/SHktYt7.png

The Fight for Pink
i.imgur.com/k5CUsuH.png
The first struggles in the breakaway group came at the first cat.4 climb. Valerio Conti gave Monsalve and Politt a damn hard time, showing he is the best fit for up-and-down racing in the hilly surroundings of Pescara.
i.imgur.com/vAChZz7.png
The steep hills in the last 60 kms, the sudden rainfall and a few crashes caused huge splits in the bunch. Only 49 riders were still in the it ahead of the penultimate climb. The breakaway trio had 1'46" of their gap left.
i.imgur.com/I3V2cEz.png
Vuillermoz attacked on this penultimate climb when the pace inside the bunch started to drop. Aiming for the stage win I.Izagirre denied him? Meanwhile Politt'd been dropped by the E1, gap to the peloton at 2'40".
i.imgur.com/IHbsaP0.png
Conti claimed the mountain jersey on the last summit. From then on he was on his own because Monsalve had cracked too. He had 8 kms to go and 2 minutes on a group that contained Mollema, Quintana and Landa.
i.imgur.com/2GlDfXL.png
In the final descent Quintana and Landa flew by Monsalve. In a reduced pack Lopez led the chase. I.Izagirre had to give everything to keep up.
i.imgur.com/8IWsv5y.png
Everything seemed to come back together in the concluding straight. As Quintana accepted being overhauled, Landa accelerated to catch Conti.
i.imgur.com/k9YLtE0.png
Landa passed by the Italian without looking back, and the latter couldn't respond. Landa won ahead of M.Lopez and Kennaugh, but he didn't get the clear time gap. Bonus seconds improved their overall place though.
