Debatable who to pick but a selection of pre race favourites finishing positions today:

Nibali 3rd +31

Wiggins 10th +1:08

Scarponi 12th +1:10

Gesink 14th +1:16

Hesjedal no where +saving myself for a stage win attempt

Best surprise has been Evans but Santambrogio must be licking his lips at the prospect of a podium too.

Also what were the youngsters like Henao and Aru doing with their rest day - did no one drag them out of bed? There's me thinking being 25 or under is an advantage in life Pfft

Weening said he's not going for GC few times. He's here for stage win, so was no point in trying to stay with best today.

Best explanation I've heard all day:

"Great day for Team Sky, played their cards well knowing that the 20% grades would be too much for Wiggins and took the stage win with Uran. Well played guys. Wiggins will put the pressure on in the days to come to break Nibali who traditionally has a bad day every now and again in the hills. "

Did Hesjedal seriously finish over 20 minutes down? That impossible! What did he do? Get to the top and rode back down?
There's a fine line between "psychotherapist" and "psycho the rapist"

He is. Apparently the first thing he did was to visit the toilet.

Urggh, nice. Just what you need when riding up 2 mountains. Thanks for the info.

I just don't get it. Why is that Sky train to effecient? No offence, but Zandio at the front and some extremely strong climbers lose touch, I don't get it. Yet the entire Sky train has no trouble following... Someone explain this to me, please Pfft

Steady pace. The more in the back you are, the more you need to accelerate to reposition, and to slow down when some one in front of you slows down, etc.
In the end a steady pace costs less energy (so there's more left for actual efforts).
Especially when the slope is important, there's little drafting from riders in front, so there's little interest in sitting in the back of a group.

(15 pages of messages this afternoon ? seriously guy, think of the people who read all that after coming home from work Pfft )

What a great stage! Colombian Domination and great ride from Pozzovivo and Evans as well.

Shame Hesjedal is doing so bad. I hope he will quit or just ride to build (the obviously lacking) form for the Tour or Vuelta unless its sickness thats causing him the trouble. That or go for a stage win. But still this race is lost for him.

Giro is just great ..first big mountain stage. Riders all over the road separetly.
Never happens at TdF

17 Dario Cataldo - Sky Procycling
18 Tanel Kangert - Astana Pro Team 2.25
19 Sergio Luis Henao Montoya - Sky Procycling 3.14

how did Kangert manage to finish so high? Wasn't he dropped early before the Uran attack and when Agnoli was still working hard for Nibali?
