Dominik Nerz: The Next Level
dienblad
Good luck in La Vuelta. Sagan is a beat that can go for several stage wins, and NIbali is a great GC-contender, with Szmyd and Dominik as luxury domestiques.
Hope Dominik gets a change in a breakaway!

I didn't realise Liquigas had such a strong team until I saw this team for Vuelta ... Pfft

Almost a dream team. And for Vuelta more than enough to get lots of stage wins, with Vuelta being easiest GT. Nerz shod do very well indeed. Wouldn't be surprsied with Top 10 here for Nerz and a win for Krezuiger, with lots of stage wins for Sagan/Finetto. Good luck Wink Great preview too Wink

Wow, those are many nice comments Smile I'm not going to respond to all of them, so a big thanks to all of you Wink

@ FreitasPCM: Anything but the podium would be a complete disaster Wink And 2nd or 3rd would be a bit disppointing, so the win is definetely the goal.

@ Teddy: Well, Nibbles starts with a form of 90 and should hit his peak in the last two weeks, so I'm pretty optimistic Wink

@ Avin: You have to see that Sagan (although he is a terribly awesome beast) starts the Vuelta with a shape of 70. So don't expect too much of him in the first week at least. Sprints on extreme are always difficult... So 12 wins are maybe a bit exaggerated but yeah, 3-5 should be possible Wink

@ Pellizotti2: The crazy thing is, he still has one star left for mountains and four (!!!) stars left for sprinting. So he's not only the best puncheur (along with Gilbert), he'll also grow to be one of the best sprinters...

@ Alakagom: Yes, along with Leopard, we surely have the strongest team in the WT, especially since Sagan developed so well. But you must be mistaken, Kreuziger doesn't start here Wink

Expect the prologue in a couple of hours!

The short time trial won't probably bring us big time differences but might give a good indication for the rider's shape.

Dominik's Pre-Race Comment

I'm still in good shape and hope for a decent result today. I'm not the best time trialist but among the U25 contenders, I'm among the betters. Also, it would be important for Nibbles to gain maybe some time already.

Joaquim Rodriguez does pretty well. He's even faster than Porte!
11'16
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/17.jpg
18:05:

Dominik's Comment

Now that was a good kick-off! Vincenzo showed his great shape and ambitions and did not only already gain the red jersey but of course also scores our first stage win!

I'm also satisfied with my result. It's a pity that I didn't feel that well today, otherwise an even better outcome would have been possible. But hey, with my time trialing skills, I won't complain about a 22nd place in a GT prologue!

We were also all very surprised about Peter Sagan's strong performance. That was his first race in months, he doesn't even really peak for the Vuelta, and nevertheless he easily scores a Top 5 result. That guy is awesome!

After that easy start, the real race and the real pains start tomorrow, 187 kilometers to Cordoba. See you then,

I didn´t notice the transfer news until now. A pity that Sabatini and Guarnieri had to leave, but Klemme and Burghart are perhaps more useful for this team. And that were some great results in the prologue, keep it up!

The first road stage of the Vuelta is mostly flat. We'll see how the hill towards the end will affect the riders.

Dominik's Pre-Race Comment

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/1F.jpg

Our plan is to make the ascent up that last hill as hard as possible to give Finetto an advantage over the pure sprinters. Also, if he feels well, Peter Sagan might try an attack.

Km 2:
Under palms, the first attack of the Vuelta 2012 comes from Stuart O'Grady.
.
Km 8:
Roger Kluge followed and the duo is two minutes in front of the pack. Andreas Klier (Garmin) is halfway between them.
.
Km 16:
While a couple of others try to reach the front, Klier already caught up.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/22.jpg
Km 20:
Europcar's leader Christophe Kern crashed! Tony Hurel falls back to help. They'll eventually make it back, let's hope Kern isn't injured.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/23.jpg
Km 35:
Eventually, 10 riders found themselves almost four minutes in front of the pack.
.
Km 87:
With 100 kms to go and the group 8 minutes in front, T-Mobile and Movistar start doing the pace. The gap decreases.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/24.jpg
Km 132:
The next crash! This time, it's Andrey Kashechkin who hits the ground. Meanwhile, with 54 kms to go, the escapees are 4'40 in front.
.
Km 159:
27 kilometers left. The gap to the front group is still three minutes and T-Mobile and Movistar increase the pace even more. The pack is pretty streched and the overall riders have to pay attention on the last hill.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/25.jpg
Km 172:
With 2 kms to the top, O'Grady and Marten Neyens try to leave their fellow escapees behind!
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/26.jpg
Km 172:
T-Mobile continues to do a very high pace and the pack splits! 15 kms to go and still two minutes for the front group, who are together again.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/27.jpg
Km 173:
Close from the top of the hill, Peter Sagan in his white jersey attacks! The break is almost certain to take the win.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/28.jpg
Km 180:
Only six riders are left together in front with 6 kms to go, and now Maksym Iglinsky tries an attack!
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/29.jpg
Km 185:Iglinsky wasn't successful and now the break is sprinting for the win. Van Winden is in front with Kluge and O'Grady at his wheel.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/210.jpg
Km 184:
Meanwhile, Sagan is caught again with 2 kms to go. Marcato leads out Finetto, who is followed by Boasson Hagen.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/211.jpg
Km 186:
Van Winden took the whole sprint from the front and takes the biggest win of his career. Kluge on two, O'Grady on three.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/212.jpg
Km 186:
On the last meters, the pack overtook the other four escapees. Boasson Hagen thus finishes seventh, Finetto tenth. Nerz and Nibali did very well, too, and finish 12th and 13th, respectively. Nibali has to give up his red jersey nevertheless.
.
Km 186:
Some rider were caught off-guarded by the high pace on the hill and fell back. Mikel Astarloza lost three minutes on the favorites, Richie Porte four and a half, which costs him his overall ambitions already. Stupid guy. But much more important for Dominik: Romain Sicard was in Porte's group as well! That makes Dom the top favorite for white now!

Dominik's Comment

I'm not really sure about this stage. On the one hand, we lost the lead in all classifications and a 10th place is not a top result. On the other hand, the rankings at this point of the race are pretty unimportant. Plus, it might even be a relief not to have to protect red throughout the whole three weeks. And regarding the sprint, the fourth place of Mauro in the sprint of the main pack (third even if you leave out Maaskant) really gives us hope for the next stages.

So it's an ambivalent résumé for the team today. Maybe tomorrow will be more positive. But personally, there was one great thing about today: Sicard's unattentiveness on the last hill, that costed him four and a half minutes! Looks great for white now. Maybe my biggest rival now will be my teammate: Peter Sagan. We'll see!

Stay tuned,

The stage is classified as hilly but the ascents aren't very demanding. It'll probably be another breakaway win or a bunch sprint.

To avoid something like yesterday, we'll try to send someone into the break. If it comes down to a mass sprint, Mauro Finetto will give his best. For the rest of the team including me, the day should be rather calm.

Km 88:
Stijn Devolder made it to the front. The group now consists of 10 riders.
.
Km 100:
With 52 kms to go, the pack cut down the lead to 3'30.
.
Km 138:
Over the last small hill, the escapees could again increase their lead a bit to 1'40 with 14 kms to go. But the pack seems to be determined to catch them.
.
Km 147:
With 5 kms to go, the break is still over a minute away. They'll sprint for the win.

Km 152:
Van Avermaet takes it! Not surprising. Marco Marcato achieves a great third place behind Eeckhout, next to David Veilleux. Devolder is the new overall leader.

Km 152:
Finetto again comes in fourth in the pack. Nerz is right on his wheel and finishes 17th. Another top sprint result for the youngster, who will also be pleased to hear that Rafael Valls lost quite a bit of time today, eliminating another U25 contender.

Dominik's Comment

Another very pleasing stage for us. It's strange that the sprinter teams again did not chase enough. But this time, we don't care! Marco Marcato did a terrific job all day long and especially in the final sprint. We're very satisfied with the podium. And of course the fourth place he posseses now.

Also, the sprint of the pack was very decent again. Places four six and seven, especially my sixth (or seventeenth), are great. So far, this Vuelta is a success for us.

Yours,

I know that feeling

Really nice so far. Epic screens, can't wait for the mountains to see Dom do his thing. Smile

Don't we all, it's usually that one time we don't send anybody they get away Rolling Eyes Great to see Nerz in perfect position for best young rider. If he can win that it will be a huge stepping stone in his career Wink.
