this was amusing...Soler saying he wouldn't have attacked if he knew the stage. he swore he thought it was all downhill from the top of the galibier... |

I think it's a shame that vino is injured.I really would have liked that he could compete at full strength, Klöden too.And if Contador can keep up with the favorites in the 3rd week than he has a good chance for a podium spot. I don't think Rasmussen will win and Menchov is dissapointing he even lost time on vino

I'm not so sure. I think Rasmussen may hold on for a podium spot, but it'll probably be between Contador, Evans, Valverde and Mayo this year

I think we can only tell after the first Pyreneean stage who the contenders are going to be.
it's been an atypical tour with difficulties for pretty much everyone:
Astana
Vino and Klöden are injured, Vino the more so and is already very much behind.
Klöden is also too far to have more than a small chance to contend, although he is better than everyone else in a time trial.
Caisse
Pereiro not up to it, as predicted, and Valverde at the top of the candidates' list for now
T-Mobile
Rogers crashed
CSC
Sastre has an injured knee. worst place for a cyclist. hope he heals it in time for the Pyrenees. we need him to liven up the mountains, otherwise the attacks will come in extremely late as has been the case
Lotto
Evans finally learned not to ride so many races and get to the Tour dead. I'm now supporting him....or basically anyone else who can take the win away from Contador and Valverde
(I didn't say "the two spaniards" because then you'd think it was because they're spanish)
Rabobank
Chicken will do very well to stay with the top in all the mountains, which I VERY MUCH doubt he'll do. he might be up for a top5 with no bad luck, but definitely no podium unless he has a randomly excellent day.
Menchov is menchov. too much of a nice guy to have that real drive and ambition to win. that's life.
AG2R
Moreau will probably bust in the Pyrenees, as I've been saying since June. more credit to the old man if he doesn't. the Galibier stage has nothing to do with that. he cracked because he's ALWAYS been bad after rest days. some riders just have that problem, and there's not much they can do about it. the next rest day is between mountain stages. oops....
Discovery
according to Contador, he even surprised himself. Levi was even more disappointing than I thought he would be.....so far
Mayo
no comment. let's see if he cracks the top5 for the first time
don't think I forgot anyone.
if you add in everyone (not just GC contenders) you'll see that there's been an unusually high number of crashes, punctures, etc. weird.

Well since Issosso like to focus on the negative, id like to take this opprotunity to show a little optimism.
Predictor-Lotto's riders had a good show today with evans in the front but more impressivley Chris Horner is riding the best tour of his life and sitting in 25th. And of course Johan Van Sumeren has really turned himslef inside out for th team.
Discovery proved itself the strongest team in the race today with an early break with both Goose and Popo. Even though he was in the break from the first climb of the day popo still supported his teamates all the way to the final K's and only lost a little time. Contador has an impressice turn of speed on the climbs. Goose was strong, and Levi (<3) is getting stronger and stronger each day climbing his way to the top. Even Sergio Paulinhorode well.
CSC's riders have obviously done well this tour. Cancellara has two stages under his belt and a suitcase full of yellow jerseys. Sastre is still up there, Schleck is in 13th and Vande Velde finished strong in the Vino group. I think Zabriskie may be going for the Latern Rouge and might be looking at "defending it" Nah DZ is in the hurt locker.
Iban May is riding strong but Cobo seems a bit of an idiot to me. When the yellow jersey group split cause evans is slow cobo and may just kinda sat there. Since Mayo is the leader of the team then his teamates should be riding for him. An cobo was in that group. Maybe there is some strtegy going on there but i fail to see the logic otherwise strong riding.
Valverde is so hyped up that a good ride for him in my understanding is that he would win by a hge margin on the toughest stage of the tour so though he is riding well im not blown away by his result.
Now for Barloworld. They are amazingly strong and what they are doing is exactly what a wildcard is supposed to d to earn their spot and that is make the race exceiting. Robbie Hunter has been all over the top 10, todays winner Soler is obviously a guy to watch and Kanstantin Sitsou is also in the top 25. Soler i think could also go for the KoM jersy. He is up there in second behind Rasmussne and with the Dane in Yellw and Menchove dropping off the map he has to defend his position in the overall.

I have to agree that Disco have looked the strongest, Levi will need a very good Pryrenees though - and he may have to work for Contador now.
Shame that Schleck wasnt as good today.
Oh and good to see Evans attacking for once.

funny what i just read in a german board, some people are pretty sure that klöden will win ...
i don't think he is the main favorite but when he gets better till next weekend he will be hard to beat (2 loooong TT)...
i hope valverde can make it... imho they have now the strongest team for defending a yellow jersey (karpets, arroyo, pereiro, gutierrez ....)

"Penalties all around"
my question would be why the h*** leipheimer wasn't given a penalty ?? i mean come on, the mechanic pulled of a little stunt when he forced himself between levi and the car and this "tandem" was speeding up like crazy
if seen them helping by holding on to bottles to long or faking a mechanical but this was just open cheating

when did I focus on the negative? I just said it was atypical for so many people to have difficulties, and then I made an assessment of the GC riders.

Even Sergio Paulinhorode well.
what's that supposed to mean, eh??
the eurosport commentator is a personal friend of Paulinho and speaks to him on the phone about 5 times a week throughout the season, every single day when he's racing.
every day on TV he casually gives the "update" during live feeds of races on what Sérgio has been saying.
basically today was:
Contador knows he won't be able to keep this up, so he's burning every last ounce of strength these days, leaving nothing for later, to try and get a stage.
let's hope he can keep it up, Evans too and Sastre can raise his game. it would make things very exciting.
although I unfortunately don't think Sastre can shake off a knee injury in so little time...
EDIT: oh yes, forgot this:
Sérgio is being asked to share the Vuelta leadership with Devolder since his classics season (where he was going to be team leader) was ruined by hay fever

I think Vino knows he's mistake..to call on stage 8 Klöden back to help him. Thats about 20 seconds that Klöden lost there.
Caisse
Pereiro not up to it, as predicted, and Valverde at the top of the candidates' list for now
Valverde in now one bigest GC contender. He ride's like really matured rider now.
T-Mobile
Rogers crashed
T-Mobile bad big tour season continous. I was expectin much more about this team in TdF...but crash is always crash. Gerdeman will be one and only T-Mobile flash..now on they will be quite invisible.
CSC
Sastre has an injured knee. worst place for a cyclist. hope he heals it in time for the Pyrenees. we need him to liven up the mountains, otherwise the attacks will come in extremely late as has been the case

My vote for that.
Discovery
according to Contador, he even surprised himself. Levi was even more disappointing than I thought he would be.....so far
Discovery is visible again this year. Contador is serious threat to Valverde. Leiphaimer is already on his place..no something big for him. And hey Popo this time he can even ride..good positiv thing for discovery.
Mayo
no comment. let's see if he cracks the top5 for the first time
I even cant remember last time when he was so good.
Great tour we have running...Much more intresting when last year...

Levi took a penalty for the so called "stunt" but Levi is a very small guy. If he gets a bike change the bike isnt going to be perfect for him. The mechanic was adjusting his seat. (did you not see the allen wrench?) And why else would a mechanic stick his face into the backside area of a sweaty man in skin tight clothes

Interesting to note that on stage seven Soler was 4th and on 8, Soler placed 33rd but suffered severe cramps and a there was some severe pain in the sole of his foot. He was able to overcome the cramps and endure the pain. Rest day allowed liason with shoe manufacturer tech and they were able to sort out the sore foot prob with a shoe modification. He's only 23 and may well be a future star of mountain stages - the 9th stage victory was only his 4th ever since turning pro.
Team Barloworld riders achievement at such a high profile level is great for the sport too as it promotes it very much in two countries where pro cycling probably doesn't get a lot of media attention ie Columbia and South Africa. Barloworld being a SA sponsor too hopefully will see a return on their investment from this exposure and be in a position to increase it's sponsorship. |

they won't transmit anything again. that's what they've been saying for months.
after this one, it's probably the end of the world championships this year. unless they can find another location in a hurry. |

Even though Sinkewitz was caught in June he did sign the doping charter so if he is found guilty he has to ride in a CT team and give up his salary, another question is whether T-Mobile still wants to continue now that a rider from their team is found guilty after they have been trying to clean their team
