STAGE 20: Sondrio - Passo del Stelvio 184 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Elissonde(GPM) **Salas(HLE) *Henao(YTE)

The penultimate stage. This stage is the hardest we take in over 5900 meters of climbing ending on the fabled Passo del Stelvio which is 23 kilometres @ 8% average gradient. We also take in the Forcolo di Livigno (32 kilometres @ 5.9%) and the Passo dell Umbrail (17.5 kilometres @ 7.2%).

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0326_zps985fc2fc.jpg

After many early battles a four man quality break gets away on the Forcolo di Livigno. They are: Andreasen, Kennaugh, Monier and Hermans who is best placed @ 12th 28:00.

At the top with 129 kilometres to go they would have 14:30 over the peloton.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0329_zps52881503.jpg

Not wanting the break to gain a ridiculous advantage, ie over 30:00, we send Rojas and Al Ghanim to the front of the peloton. We slightly up the pace.

With 105 kilometres to go Maire and Mancuso attack out of the peloton. Quite a strange move as the original break have a whopping 18:00 over the peloton.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0335_zpse0f9ae3b.jpg

70 kilometres to go we are on the Passo dell Umbrail. The original break have 22:00. Stortoni and Preidler are dropped.

We push on the pace with four riders in the front group which also contains: De Vos, Salas and pink jersey, Henao.

The real high altitude seems to be affecting the Austrian....can he make it back... there is still time.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0346_zpsf942f7ba.jpg

We hit the Stelvio with the original break having 18:00 over the now five man GC group. The original break is down to just Andreasen and Kennaugh.

Preidler, Stortoni, Seeldrayers and Hivert who was shadowing the others start the climb 1:00 behind Duran and Henao.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0352_zps5bdd8749.jpg

Salas and Henao attack with 8 kilometres to go. WHY!

Because Preidler and Stortoni have managed to ride across clearly feeling better than before..

Out front Andreasen drops his fellow escapee Kennaugh before the Brit rides back up to the wheel. The gap coming down to the GC group like a swooping bird of prey.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0358_zpsd0f81ede.jpg

2 kilometres to go the break are caught by a surging Henao.
Despite being out in one of the all time longest breaks Andreasen kicks again...

The other favourites....can't respond... NO they can not!

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0360_zps0a0a895a.jpg

Henao just beats the Dane in a heart braking finish. Crossing the line the Colombian surely knew he would likely win his third Giro. WHY!

The gaps back were massive.....

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0361_zps328f553d.jpg

Duran survives. He did really well and now secures his third spot, with it very unlikely Stortoni will out TT him. What a stage. Most people coming home completely empty.

There is even a slight chance of catching a severely tiring Austrian for second....

Hope Duran can keep that podium place in the last stage Wink

Good job, nothing more to expect but a reduced gap in such a stage Smile

Now that the podium is secured and another stage win (congrates :bananaSmile let's go for the 2nd place!

Oh and please do have some real objectives for the Tour Wink

STAGE 21: Monza - Milano 26 KM's

Stage Favourites:
***Elissonde(GPM) **Durbridge(OGE) *Frank(EML)

We have made it. The finish is almost here. What a gruelling Giro. I took my hat off to our remaining six riders ahead of the pan flat time trial.

But the business is not over. A good time trial from Duran will see him move up to 2nd overall. 1'24 is needed over Preidler for this dream to come true.

I expect Duran to challenge for a stage win with the GC men likely suffering less than the pure time trialists.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0366_zps562b22e8.jpg

The early times: Tennant goes fastest with a time of 34'32.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0367_zps37cdd972.jpg

Before Durbridge goes quickest. He passes Rojas on his way to a time of 34:10.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0369_zps0f371fdf.jpg

These times are tested by the likes of Velits and Porte but they hold steady until the top 10 are all but remain.

Elissonde goes quickest the first checkpoint, a good time from him will see him move up to 6th on GC. He goes '1 quicker than Durbridge @ 10'18.

At the finish...... the Frenchman goes fastest with a time of 33'41.

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0368_zpsb51728cc.jpg

Now the battle for second.... At the first checkpoint Duran is '21 down. The stage is gone. But second overall is still a possibility. 1'24 over Preidler is needed.

20 km to go: Duran is '13 up on Preidler
9 km to go: Duran is '56 up on Preidler

A strong finish will see Duran claim second......

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0371_zps975048d5.jpg

A strong finish is what we get. Duran passes Stortoni on his way to a time of 34'20. Almost 2:00 ahead of Preidler.

Duran moves up to second in GC...

i874.photobucket.com/albums/ab304/therider92/PCM0376_zpsd8b1ef03.jpg

Elissonde takes the final stage but there is no denying the winner of this Giro, Sergio Henao.

The Colombian is truly one of the finest Giro riders in modern times, he wins his third Giro whilst claiming the points jersey and five stage wins as well. It has been an honour for us and Duran, who once again finishes a GT on the podium, to finish second to this great. Preidler rides his best GT and would have challenged even closer if fatigue didn't set in in the last few days.

An aggressive Barta wins the KOM jersey. Mesmen of Rabobank takes home the white jersey being the only rider left in that competition. Qatar Optics finished second in the team classification '39 behind Gaprom.

It was a brilliant Giro for us, 2 stage wins were great. Finishing on the podium in a GT was one of our more difficult season goals and we sure did it. I'm off to Belgium now to spend some time with Jun Lee.

RACE: Chateaulin - Chateaulin 168 KM's

A bad race for us, not least because a two man break held off the peloton and Van Gheem was part of that break but was the only rider to be dropped.

At the end of the season the cycling world is set to be rocked by a range of long standing successful sponsors withdrawing from the sport. No need to worry as replacements have been found.

Gazprom will be replaced by E-ON
Katusha will be replaced by L.G
and Orica DS, Cadel Evans, confirmed Orica is to be replaced by Citrix.

After being neck and neck in the WT rankings with Argos Oil come the start of the Giro we now lead them after a great Giro. Proof of a great start to the season, we are truly established as one of the best outfits in world cycling.

Our continental team took part in the Tour of the Czech Republic and Al Asmari was our best rider there. However, after growing in stature in the mountains and transitioning well after coming over from the far east/ pacific region the rider of the month goes to the 'Kiribati Kid'.

@ MrUFo - Thanks, finishing second to Henao in that form is not bad at all. Wink
@ duxili - What a Giro! Don't worry I'm sure you're Frenchman will be on the podium at le Tour. Shock
@ HaRe - It really was. Now 2 GT's back to back where we finish second! Smile
@ Sutty - You said it all. Cool

It is as we feared. Qatar Optics is becoming cash strapped and fast. What does this mean for the team? In the short term thankfully not much as the sponsors have the means to pay the riders for the rest of the season.

However, next season the squad payroll will be significantly reduced. If a range of sponsors didn't help out our continental team then we might already be in severe difficulty. All of this stems form the saturation of the global markets for glasses and eyewear, which Qatar Optics specialises in.

So we should enjoy this great set of riders while we can as next season more 'unknown' and local riders from Qatar will be coming to the team en mass to fill up the spaces.

Hivert, Truhanov and Cziraki have already been informed that their contracts will not be renewed, sadly the majority of the squad will be informed of a similar fate.

It is not all bad news. For the past week I am back home in Antwerp and I have fantastic news. My Sun with Jun Lee, Jelly-Sun, who is now 20 months old has conjured up his first word....it was.......JELLY!!!

@ Krisa - Duran may give the Vuelta a good go but that Giro might have been the chance for a GT win. Smile
@619170 - Maybe. Wink Thought it is unlikely he will be riding with us.
@ Sutty - Yeah, savour it! Smile
