It’s funny how, even though everything else points to the contrary, the commentators are still going about Brazil’s “samba-football”.
Dunga has laid down a different path for the team. It’s much more defensively oriented, and much drier offensively. This goes back further than Dunga as well, back in 2002 Brazil were hardly what you could call “samba”.
They play counter-attack.
Just as they did in 2002, 1994, and to an extent 1998. Not to mention the ultra-defensive Brazil of 1990.
Other than the crap self-serving attempt at attacking play in 2006, the last non-defensive Brazil was in 1982.
Well I agree the do not play Samba football but it does not mean they play counter attack. The make a very boring and slow pass play. You only have to take a look to the possession percentage to proof it 63 for Brazil.
i wonder myself if you really watch the USA WC, the really play an awesome offensive football. I may have to remember the 3-2 against holland, which was the best match of the championship for me |

Predictably the commentators are idiots. The game went exactly as you'd expect considering the way both teams play, yet they professed their shock throughout.
They know nothing. I feel sorry for the british audience.
The local ones here aren't any better, with the exception of one co-commentator on one channel who actually does know a lot.
Haha...that's funny because when you mentioned you watched the BBC coverage for one match, I was thinking, just wait until you watch on ITV. BBC is often annoying, but ITV is horrendous.
Looking forward to seeing how Spain - Switzerland turns out, but especially how Honduras - Chile turns out. I know very little about how Honduras play, but I imagine that it will be a very open affair. Sadly I miss both matches because of a history exam, but should be able to catch them later
Also, I wonder the North Korea - Brazil match was shown in Pyongyang after all? I guess we'll never know, but come on, that's a pretty incredible achievement to score against Brazil and play so well defensively. Shame they won't see it like that. |

I think the most likely scenario is that they air some caind of highlights stolen from South Korea a couple of days afterwards (edited to make North Korea look vastly superior to Brazil of course)
But yeah, I guess we will not know... |

I think the match was not broadcast in the DPRK, because the South Korean station which have the rights of the WC and was in negotiations with DPRK's government decided to not to cede the signal after the sinking of the Cheonan, for which the RoK accuses the DPRK.
I suppose that they'll show some highlights though. |

It has nothing to do with the sinking of anything.
Kim Jong-Il announced that North Korean national TV will only rebroadcast matches if North Korea doesn't lose.
And they lost the match against Brazil, so no highlights or anything in Pyongyang.
The goalscorer might get an extra ration of rice today though.

Well, my guess was that they would announce that the game had been shortened, then show their goal and say that they won 1-0 |

'One thousand Chinese fans had been recruited for the tournament as surrogate North Korean cheerleaders, including actors and musicians. [...] They had been handpicked by the North Korean government and did not know each other until arriving here Tuesday.'
And Honduras v Chile now. If Chile could provide their cunning football so expected

While I hate to admit it, I got to say that Norwegians, for once, are useful. All the matches that are not broadcast on the two Danish main channels (DR1 and TV 2) are shown at the Norwegian TV 2 instead. So even though I don't have the third Danish broadcast channel, I haven't missed a single match yet, thanks to the Norwegians |

Which is exactly what happens when a counter-attacking team play a purely defensive team like N.Korea.
Brazil play on the counter. And they do it extremely well.

I disagree with you. So does Jonathan Wilson. So does Marcello Lippi. So does Zagallo. So does Parreira who coached that Brazil team.
They played counter-attack. That's what their players were suited for.

Judging by qualifying and friendlies, Honduras are the worst team in the tournament.

Here's a quote by Parreira himself, recently:
Vejo que o time (de 2010) se defende bem e contra-ataca bem. O Dunga tem essa filosofia que eu tinha, de um time bem organizado.
Não que seja defensivo, mas tem oito atrás da linha da bola, às vezes até nove, só com o Luis Fabiano na frente. A grande arma da seleção é o contra-ataque, a bola parada.
And the translation:
I see the team (of 2010) defends well and counter-attacks well. Dunga has that philosophy that I also had. It's a well organized team.
Not that it's defensive, but there are 8 players behind the ball, sometimes nine with only Luis Fabiano up front. The selecção's great weapon is the counter-attack and the set pieces

I actually watched a world cup game. The new zealand one with the BBC Chris Moyles comedy commentary..
Never laughed so much whilst watching sport in my life. Now, I shall leave this thread and not come back until Chris Moyles returns for Fridays Germany match.

Bla bla bla. Bullshit.

Also, good game by Chile so far. The fact they lack a proper center forward isn't helping Honduras at all, as all Chile's attackers have a lot of mobility and the defence hasn't a clear reference.

Chile was really good, but they should've scored at least 4 goals. They had a shit load of good chances |

Chile played well. They stretched the play and forced the pace and stood it till the end. Though I fear they'll get exhausted quickly

This is how much Portugal's offence suck:
Today they played a practice match against the under 19s of a south african club.
0-0
The players, predictably, left even more depressed than they already had been
