Stage 17

Alberto Contador felt strong after the rest day - with a very good recovery. He was ready to battle Schleck and Dekker on the first of 4 consecutive mountain stages, as he looks to regain the Maillot Jaune.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance92.png

Stevic went with the early break and took 6th on the first climb - 11th Overall Simoni too the full points.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance93.png

They were all caught but Simoni still took 2nd on the next climb, behind di Gregorio
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance94.png

Simoni bounced back to win climb 3
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance95.png

But Di Gregorio again beat Simoni on climb 4
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance96.png

At the start of the descent of the 4th climb, Gesink crashed bringing Rasmussen down with him. The pair would end up losing 40 minutes on the day's winner and Gesink slips from 16th overall to 35th - Rasmussen falls to 70th.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance97.png

Chris Hoy also crashed, already being in the Grupetto, and got the little injured symbol. He soldiered through the stage though and somehow managed to rejoin the Grupetto in the last few kilometres, thus avoiding elimination.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance98.png

Back up front, Simoni chose not to try to win the 5th climb, as Menchov took the points
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance99.png

It seems Simoni was waiting til the Joux Plane to make a more serious attack. Contador counters!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance100.png

Brajkovic also goes with them as they form a leading trio
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance101.png

Dekker could only put in a feeble attack and Schleck could not do much better. This is a golden opportunity for Contador!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance102.png

Further up the Joux Plane, Simoni cracked
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance103.png

He would join up with Dekker and Schleck before being dropped by them and sitting up for the day.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance104.png

Contador led Brajkovic over the top of the Joux Plane with 1'20 advantage over Schleck and Dekker
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance105.png

He kept pushing up the Avoriaz and the lead grew
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance106.png

It was over 2 minutes when, with 3km to go, Brajkovic was forced to let go
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance107.png

Contador kept on going and took a dominating victory.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance108.png

Brajkovic finishes 2nd, he has firmly consolidated 4th overall now.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance109.png

Dekker takes 3rd ahead of Schleck - but they came in 3 minutes down on Contador!!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance110.png

Igor Anton gave a first real hint of a stronger performance as he finished 16th to rise to 25th overall from 29th. He is right on course for the Vuelta.

Still 3 mountain stages to go, but you've done the toughest task already...

Stage 18

It's the one they all want to win! Like the Champs Elysses for Climbers, the Alpe D'Huez is a must win climb for climbers. Contador is no exception.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance112.png

Fran Perez decided he might aswell attack today, so he did. He had John Devine for company but the lazy American refused to relay at all. Bastard. That did mean Perez could pick up maximum KoM points though.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance113.png

In the descent of the first climb, Dekker crashed! He got back to the main group quickly though.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance114.png

And in the descent of Climb 2, Dekker, Schleck and some others tried to repeat the move that gained Schleck so much time a few stages ago
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance115.png

But their puny resistance was no match for Anton, Millar and Lloyd
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance116.png

So after the first 3 climbs of the day (All won by Perez) it was on to the Galibier and Dekker attacked
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance117.png

Did he really think I would let him get away though?
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance118.png

The pair held a minutes advantage and Contador decided he might as well work with Dekker. They caught up to Perez and Devine.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance119.png

Perez shortly ran out of energy leaving just 3 and as Dekker shouted at Devine for being a lazy bastard, Contador attacked.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance120.png

Dekker must have been pissed off at himself since he didnt even try to counter, he just hid behind Devine for a bit - nearly getting caught by the next group before getting up to speed again. Contador was away!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance121.png

Over the galibier and down the descent, Contador held 1'38 at the foot of Alpe d'Huez. Dekker was joined by the riders ranked 3-7: Schleck, Brajkovic, Kloden, Popovych and Gerdemann. Could these 6 close down the gap on Contador? Nope, Contador just pulled away further and further and further and further etc etc
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance122.png

Contador wins Alpe d'Huez!
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance123.png

5 minutes later, Andreas Kloden takes 2nd, having attacked away from the others. Dekker took 3rd.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance124.png

Sadly, this stage ended Chris Hoy's race. His injury from yesterdays crash meant he was dropped early on and never even saw the grupetto, finishing outside the time limit.

Stage 19

Its a 19km Mountain TT and well done to Roman Kreuziger, he wins the 'Best of the Rest' award today as he took 2nd place.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance127.png

Contador was on fire today though (Even with just a +1 daily form). He passed Dekker before the halfway stage
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance125.png

And also managed to pass Schleck aswell

Stage 20

Fran Perez went on the attack again early on in the stage
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance128.png

He won the first 2 KoMs solo but Simoni took the 3rd having chased down Perez since the 2nd climb.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance129.png

When we get to the 4th climb, Simoni and Perez are gone and theres a lead group of around 20-25 riders. Eltink, Gesink and Gomez Marchante find themselves slightly ahead of the group due to a strong relay.
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance130.png

Eltink was determined to grasp this opportunity
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance131.png

He won the 4th and then the 5th climb, but the gap didnt grow
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance132.png

And at the foot of the 6th climb, Contador attacks and breezes past Gesink and Eltink
i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa82/SportingNonsense/DFL2/tourdefrance133.png

His gap grows to 2 minutes, and he descends into Grenoble to take the win

Popovych takes 2nd, with Kloden 3rd

Anton, Millar, Perez and Lloyd all lost some places in the GC. Anton lost 4 to 30th, Millar lost 2 to 37th, while Lloyd and Perez fell out of the top 50.
