You're 16 and you work?
In the United States, when you are 16 you are expected to get a job
...for 8 bucks or so an hour?
Over here supermarket employees make 25 bucks an hour. And that's the lowest level...
$25 an hour? Wow, much more thean an average supermarket employer in Australia. maybe $10 - $15, depends on age as well I think.

I didn't consider the age thing. The friends I was refering to are all teenagers/ early twenties with part time jobs. The adults probably make something close to SweatyVikings number.
How hard can it be?

$7.49 is minimum wage
I make minimum wage, which in Michigan is $7.40 Then you have to take out the insane taxes as well so in actually I get around $7 per hour.

128 kr is 17,24 € today.
Unless you're an executive, a manager, an accountant or something, you don't earn that in a supermarket here. Even after 30 years. |

We have high prizes to weigh up for that
I actully made 20€ an hour at my summer job last year. All my 17€ supermarket friends were jealous.

Some prices are not to bad. A cheeseburger costs like 1.20€..
Stuff that come from farms are terribly expensive because the state regulates the prices and the taxes on importing are 200%.. |

I remember from Economy lessons on school, Luxembourgish people make twice as much as Norwegians
But Luxembourg is so small the average is probably influenced by the Schlecks

I currently have a student job (I guess this is what SweatyViking meant) at Tourism Torhout, and I'm lucky, I may work at this lovely place:
It's situated less than 200 meters of my house, I have to start at 11:00 or at 12:45 (so I can still sleep alot in the morning), and when there aren't many visitors (which is mostly the case ) I just sit there and do nothing So it's a perfect job for me
When there actually are visitors, I have to accompany them from the visitor's centre into the castle (which is a lane about 150 meters long), where the museum is located.. Inside the castle I also have to give a (short) explanation about what the visitors can expect inside
And I actually don't know how much money I get Probably around 8 or 9€ (straight into my pocket, so already without the taxes) |

If the prices are twice as high a 2-room apartment in the capital would cost a million euros...

I trust you, but I'm amazed. Question is : which taxes are included or excluded from that sum of money ?
Because here, the minimal wage is 9,40 €/h, which makes it a net of about 7 €/h. As we work an average of 152 h / month, you do the math, and the minimal monthly wage is somewhere between 1 050 and 1 100 € net, monthly.
Earning 80 % more for a random supermarket job is just incredible.
Maybe I should move to Norway and find a job not too far from the beaches. |

The areas outside Oslo are nice.. If you're an engineer you might want to work in Kongsberg, the engineering capital of Northern europe. That town has about 10% European (outside Scandinavia) residents from what I read. I know a Portuguese engineer who works there |
