The race to the sun kicks off with a 4.6 kilometre hilly prologue in the streets of Issy-les-Moulineaux. The results will be a small indicator for the form of the GC-contenders.
img341.imageshack.us/img341/3968/1etappe1.png

The first GC-contender who sets a great time is Kazach Alexandre Vinokourov. Rumors are that this is his last season, but Vino sets the best provisional time: 6'40.
img545.imageshack.us/img545/7640/2vino.jpg

But some German thunder is faster and sets the new best time. Tony Martin, riding for the merged Omega Pharma - Quick Step team, needs 6'38 for the 4.6 kiometres.
img593.imageshack.us/img593/4867/3tmartin.jpg

Last year's winner Chris Horner (Lotto - Ridley) is 5 seconds slower, good enough for the 8th time of the day.
img696.imageshack.us/img696/9775/4horner.jpg

Aussie Jack Bobridge ends the prologue as the best Monster Energy - Ford rider. 25th time in 6'48.
img707.imageshack.us/img707/2599/5bobridge.jpg

Spanish time trial hope for the future Jonathan Castroviejo (Euskaltel) finishes in the same time as Tony Martin. Sadly for him, he's a few tenths of a second slower.
img38.imageshack.us/img38/5195/6castroviejo.jpg

Belgian TT-champion Thomas De Gendt is our hope for the GC. He rides a decent prologue: 27th in 6'48.
img651.imageshack.us/img651/4540/7degendt.jpg

Roman Kreuziger (Astana) rides the same time as his teammate Vinokourov (6'40) and sets the 5th time of the day.
img43.imageshack.us/img43/1421/8kreuziger.jpg

Philippe Gilbert has improved a lot in his prologue and time trial skills this winter. He manages to set the 3rd time of the day in 6'39.
img577.imageshack.us/img577/3871/9gilbert.jpg

One rider to go: Alberto Contador. Apparantly, El Pistolero isn't in a top form as he sets only the 14th place, 7 seconds behind winner Tony Martin.

Word from the DS
Not a bad start, losing only 10 seconds with Bobridge and De Gendt.

The 2nd stage from Cloyes-sur-le-Loir to Buzançais, 186 kilometres, is almost completely flat, with only one small categorized climb in it. So it will probably be a stage for the sprinters.
img52.imageshack.us/img52/3010/1etappe2.jpg

Our goal today is to be in the BOTD to get some airtime on tv. Jack Bobridge is our man to do this, and he finds himself in a 16-man breakaway. Some of the members of it: Mitchell Docker (Qantas), Cyril Lemoine (Saur), Maxime Vantomme (Katusha), Yohann Gené (Europcar), Maarten Wynants (Rabobank) and Michael Barry (Sky). Lemoine wins the first Intermediate sprint, in front of Vantomme and Gené. 102 kilometres before the finish in Buzançais, they have a lead of 3'24.
img847.imageshack.us/img847/8547/1is1.jpg

Bobridge has the goal to be the first at the summit of the Cote de Saint-Aignan, so he can wear the polkadot jersey tomorrow. But Mitchell Docker beats him in the sprint for the KOTM-points. 82km to go and the lead has decreased to 1'53.
img829.imageshack.us/img829/5541/2kotm.jpg

The strong headwind is too much for the BOTD, and the peloton, led by FDJ and Garmin, catches them with 70 kilometres to go. This early in the race, what will happen now?
img268.imageshack.us/img268/7444/370km.jpg

Well, nothing happens the next 45 kilometres. So Thomas De Gendt tries to attack with 25 kilometres to go. Because of the strong headwind, he gets caught 4 kilometres after he started it.
img190.imageshack.us/img190/4459/421km.jpg

18 kilometres before the finish is another Intermediate sprint. José Joaquin Rojas (Garmin) wins the sprint, beating 2 GC-contenders. Tony Martin gets 2nd, Jonathan Castroviejo 3rd.
img62.imageshack.us/img62/1190/5is2.jpg

It looks like La Française des Jeux has set it's eyes on this stage. 5 kilometres before the finish, they are doing the pace in the peloton. 3rd in the train is William Bonnet, their main sprinter for today.
img546.imageshack.us/img546/5328/65km.jpg

William Bonnet has started the sprint with 2 km remaining. Isn't this too far before the finish, and were his nerves troubling him? And were are our riders? Somewhere far behind.
img855.imageshack.us/img855/4413/72km.jpg

Bonnet is still in the lead with one kilometre remaining, but is starting to fade. Greg Henderson (Astana) and Sébastien Turgot (Europcar) are approaching him.
img585.imageshack.us/img585/5063/81km.jpg

And Henderson passes Bonnet 25 metres before the finish and is taking the win.... No! Who's coming in between them? Leonardo Duque (Sony Ericsson) has an incredible jump from behind and surprises Henderson and Bonnet and takes the win in the 2nd stage!! Best Monster was Romain Zingle, 22nd place.

At least our sponsor will be happy with the air time. The wins was too strong for any succesful breakaway. Better luck tomorrow, when it gets a bit more hilly.

@ all: I have focused completely on the Tirreno, only De Gendt can do well in the GC in Paris - Nice. But I think the competition is too strong for him, so I'll go for a stage win with him, and try to hang on to the leading group in the other stages to minimize the time loss. And with our sprinter starting the race with a form of 66..... Not that big chance for a sprint win, I think!
No reports coming today, next to follow Saturday.

Stage 3 from Vatan to Limoges. 178.5 kilometres long with a hilly character, including 3 categorized climbs.
img256.imageshack.us/img256/1829/1etappe3.jpg

Again, we'll try to be in the BOTD today. After some attempts by Romain Zingle, it's Rob Ruijgh who take soart in a breakaway that can be succesful. This 16-man big group sprints for the first Intermediate sprint. Hayden Roulston (Nissan) wins it, followed by Mitchell Docker (Qantas) and Yohann Gené (Europcar). But after the sprint, the riders in this group start to look at each other: "You do the work!" - "No, you do it"..... So the peloton catches them again 7 km after the IS.
img703.imageshack.us/img703/5144/2is1.jpg

After a status quo in the peloton, Maarten Wynants (Rabobank) attacks. The Belgian rider creates a gap of 1'20, when the peloton approaches the first KOTM-sprint. This is the sign for Jack Bobridge to go in the counterattack, and he gets company by Bruno Pires. They catch Wynants in the first climb, the Cote du Grand Ris, and Bobridge is the first at the summit. 94 kilometres remaining and a lead of 2 minutes.
img64.imageshack.us/img64/3495/3kotm1.jpg

These 3 riders start to cooperate and the gap to the peloton increases. Wynants is the first at the summit of the Cote de St. Sarnin-Leulac (59km to go), followed by Bobridge and Pires. Thibaut Pinot (AG2R), who has attacked out of the peloton, follows at '55 and the peloton at 5'30.
img15.imageshack.us/img15/7761/4kotm2.jpg

Pinot closes the gap to the 3 leaders before the foot of the last categorized climb of the day, the Cote de Chateauponsac. Again, Bobridge is the first at the summit and secures himself of the polka dot jersey!. The peloton is 4'20 behind with 45 kilometres remaining.
img580.imageshack.us/img580/8346/5kotm3.jpg

6 kilometres after the KOTM-sprint, is the last Intermediate sprint of the day. Pires is the first, followed by our Aussie Jackie. The peloton is 3'55 behind.
img849.imageshack.us/img849/6564/6is2.jpg

The gap to the peloton decreases: 1'07 with 20 kilometres to go. But somehow, the next 10 kilometres it stays amost the same. With 10km to go, including 6 descending and 4 ascending kilometres, the lead is still 1'01. Can the 4 riders surprise the peloton??
img213.imageshack.us/img213/4103/810km.jpg

In the next 6 kilometres, the 4 leaders loose only 17 seconds from their advantage, so still '44 remaining. But when the road starts to ascend, Lotto's Philippe Gilbert attacks. Thomas De Gendt is the only one that tries to follow the wheel of Gilbert. Because of the attack, the leading group looses their gap very quickly.
img52.imageshack.us/img52/3258/94km.jpg

And the punch by Gilbert, who is in a great shape after winning 2 stages and the GC in the Tour de Méditerranée, is too much for the 4 leaders. When Phil is flying over them, Bobridge tries to answer the punch. So 2 kilometres before the finish, the situation is that Gilbert is in the lead, followed by 2 Monster Energy - riders.
img846.imageshack.us/img846/2113/102kmn.jpg

But this one is for Philippe Gilbert! Bobridge & De Gendt started to fade away in the last 1200 metres, and got passed by the approaching peloton. William Bonnet (FDJ) srints to the 2nd place, followed by Greg Henderson (Astana). De Gendt finishes as 18th. All riders finish within the same time, except Sergio Hernandez (Sony Ericsson), Albert Timmer (Sony Ericsson) and Francis De Greef, who finish at 2'27.

And another stage, the 4th of this year's Paris - Nice and th elongest with 215 kilometres. There are 4 KOTM-sprints, and the last climb before the finish (Cote du Fangas) with the summit 40 kilometres before the finish may create some changes in the GC, or not???
img577.imageshack.us/img577/6385/1etappe4.jpg

With a lot of KOTM-sprints to be collected today, Jack Bobridge wants to be in a breakaway again, to defend his jersey. And he succeeds in his attempt, when a 10-man group ride away from the peloton. Unfortunately, a lousy daily form of -5 will make it hard to collect some points.
At the first climb of the day, the Cote de Saint-Hilaire-de-Bonneval, it's Androni's Giairo Ermeti who's the first at the smiit, followed by Bobridge and Karsten Kroon (BMC). Bobridge takes the most points at the 2nd climb, the Cote de la Grande Renaude, followed by Maxim Vantomme and Ermeti. The first IS is won by Ermeti, followed by Vantomme and Yohann Gené (Europcar).
img214.imageshack.us/img214/6938/2kotm1.jpg

Then we see the white jersey of Jonathan Castroviejo (GC's nr 4) 2 minutes behind the peloton, surrounded by Euskaltel-teammates. He has crashed on the wet and slippery roads with 100km to go. But thanks to his domestiques, he comes back into the peloton.
img16.imageshack.us/img16/1364/5valcastroviejo.jpg

In the next part of the race, the BOTD gets it's maximum advantage to the peloton: 6'30. Bobridge is starting to struggle and can't sprint for the KOTM-points anymore. The 3rd KOTM-sprint is for Ermeti, followed by Vantomme and Gené, and Ermeti also wins the 4th ans last KOTM-sprint (Gené 2nd, Vantomme 3rd). The 2nd IS is won by Matteo Tossato from Saxo (Vantomme 2nd, Docker 3rd). There are 39 kilometres remaining and the lead is 4 minutes.
img268.imageshack.us/img268/1194/6kotm4.jpg

With 20 kilometres to go, the leading group splits in two parts. While the peloton is closing them in (only 1'11 behind), Yohann Gené is the cause of this split-up. Only Ermeti, Tossato, Vantomme and Javier Aramendia (Euskaltel) can follow him. Bobridge has no faith in this attack, and decides to wait for the peloton.
img851.imageshack.us/img851/9991/720km.jpg

And he is right, because the attack lasts only 8 kilometres, before the peloton is together again. The preparation for the sprint has started and with 1km to go, we see José Joaquin Rojas (Garmin) in th elead, closely followed by Sébastien Turgot (Europcar) and Daryl Impey (Qantas).
img225.imageshack.us/img225/5063/81km.jpg

But JJR has timed his jumped too early and gets passed by both of them in the last few hundred metres. Sébastien Turgot takes the win in Maurs la Jolie, a great mental boost after the 2011-season without a win! De Gendt is our best placed rider with the 13th place. 8 riders finish outside the peloton, including our young Jens Mulder, while Davd Arroyo has to abandon with a broken wrist.

Before the 5th stage of Paris - Nice, some news about our team and the Giro d'Italia.

Firstly, some bad news: Thomas Dekker has caught the flu a few days before the start of the Tirreno - Adriatico, what made his fitness level dropped 10 points. But he is recovering already and can start in the Tirreno.
img828.imageshack.us/img828/723/dekker.jpg

Than some good news: Pim Ligthart has signed a new contract with our team and will be a Monster for 2 more years! Because of this, we have decided not to prolong the contract with Jens Keukeleire, as we have 3 sprinters that are better or equally as him (Sagan, Bos, Ligthart) and one sprinting talent (Mulder).
img847.imageshack.us/img847/2014/pcm0001y.jpg

8 teams have sent in a request to get a wildcard for the Giro d'Italia. My prediction: Liquigas, Acqua et Sapone, Farnese Vini and Nespresso.

We enter the 5th stage and the GC will be shaken up today, with the finish on the Montée Laurent Jalabert, also known as Cote de Mende. The last 4 kilometres have an average gradient of 7.2% with many parts of 10%. Can anyone take over the yelow jersey, or will this one also be for Gilbert>
img843.imageshack.us/img843/1715/1etappe5.jpg

With a KOTM-sprint after 11 kilometres of cycling, it's obvious that Jack Bobridge wants some points there. He's as third at the line, behind Stijn Devolder (Vacansoleil) and Riccardo Chiarini (Androni). But after that he finds himself in a 11-man breakaway, and the gap to th epeloton is increasing. Oh well, he didn't intended to be in a breakaway today, but when it happens, you have to go on. So on the 2nd climb of the day (Cote de Montsalvy) he wants to sprint for the points, but can't get in the top 3. Romain Sicard (Euskaltel) wins this sprint, followed by Andrea Moletta (Lampre) and Alexandre Botcharov (Katusha).
img689.imageshack.us/img689/4319/2kotm2.jpg

Our young domestique Jens Mulder is in trouble in the 2nd climb, so we wait for him with the car, to see if he needs some help. But what do we see? He is doing the pace for GC's number 3 Jonathan Castroviejo! Obviously, Castroviejo suffers from some bruises and stiff muscles after his crash yesterday. It's a shame that this young and extremely talented Spanish rider looses his shot at a good GC in this way. He will loose 25 minutes today, but will finish the stage.
img408.imageshack.us/img408/805/3castroviejo.jpg

Back to the BOTD. They sprint for the 3rd KOTM-sprint, the Cote de Biounac. Bram Tankink (Rabobank) is the first on the summit, followed by Arthur Vichot (FDJ) and Kevin De Weert (Nissan). The peloton is 6'14 behind with 93 kilometres remaining.
img412.imageshack.us/img412/4249/4kotm3.jpg

After a long flat part, the penultimate climb has started. The summit of the Cote du Chabrits (2.5km at 6.4%) is only 9 kilometres before the finish. Kevin De Weert uses this climb to attack out of the BOTD and is the first at the summit. He leads Andrea Moletta by '24, Carlos Oyarzun (Movistar) by '47 and the other remaining members of the BOTD by '57.
img202.imageshack.us/img202/2177/5kotm4.jpg

GC-leader Philippe Gilbert has attacked out of the peloton in the ascend of the Cote du Chabrits and no one was able of following him. He reaches the summit 1'16 behind De Weert and has passed Bobridge. The peloton follows '40 behind Gilbert.
img26.imageshack.us/img26/7094/6gilbert.jpg

Gilbert closes the gap to the chasing group in the descend of the Cote du Chabrits, and as soon as the road starts ascending again he drops them and closes the gap to De Weert pretty quickly. With 3 kilometres remaining, he joins De Weert, has a quick look at his countrymen and leaves him behind. The peloton is 1 minute behind.
img841.imageshack.us/img841/5775/74km.jpg

Philippe Gilbert is by far the strongest on the Montée Laurent Jalabert. Is the decision made in this year's Paris - Nice??
img42.imageshack.us/img42/8425/8finish.jpg

Simon Gerrans (Qantas) wins the sprint for the 2nd place at 1'29, beating Sébastien Joly (Saur). A group with Thomas Voeckler, Damiano Cunego, Chris Horner, Roman Kreuziger and Cyril Gautier follows at 1'50.
img35.imageshack.us/img35/8461/9plek2.jpg

And the Monster Energy - riders? Well, Zingle, De Gendt and Bobridge loose 3'18 today. For some strange reason, De Gendt got passed by everyone in the descend of the Cote du Chabrits. He was in the front of the peloton when the descend started, and in place 70 when the last climb started (although he was riding on dot 90!!!). He could make up some places in the last climb, but had to settle with a very frustrating 40th place.....

Word from the DS
The gC is over. I really don't know how this happened, De Gendt got passed by everyone in the peloton and because of that got blocked in the last climb. I really don't know how to prevent this to happen. So 3 stages left to attack.
