11/7-15/7 Sibiu Cycling Tour (cat.2.1)

13/7 Stage 3/5 Sibiu – Păltiniș : 180.0 km

Christian Andersen reports: Another mountain stage starting in Sibiu today heading south west for Păltiniș in the Cindrel Mountains. Păltiniș is a ski resort founded in 1894. The famous philosopher and poet Constantin Noica lived his last 12 years in Păltiniș.

Old houses in Păltiniș:

Pre-race strategy: If yesterday was hard, today will be even harder, the stage is longer and the final climb steeper, again a perfect chance for Davide Malacarne, to gain time before the ITT. Like yesterday he will attack unless he has a very bad day.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zps5qsgvbzp.jpg

A very hot day just like yesterday, there will be a lot of water carried forward to supply the race leaders. First a morning break of 9, later joined by another 4 riders. A very strong breakaway could easily become a stage win.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpssgqzemfl.jpg

When the final climb starts, a group of 7 with race leader Malacarne starts to lay distance to the peloton, a the 10 km mark they are about 1’50 behind the breakaway, 30 sec in front of the peloton.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsxaddu6yv.jpg

Malacarne set the pace, and before long the group melts with the breakaway, only Juan Pablo Suarez (Avianca) is left in front and with only 24 sec. that won’t last.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsdptie0dw.jpg

From here the pace it not that high, the favorite group grows to 24 riders before Malacarne set in the final attack with just 1,5 km to the top.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpstvecpr6k.jpg

For the 2nd day in a row Malacarne claims victory with 23 sec to the next group. Winning for the fourth time this season. Lasse Bøchman gets in 5th. another great stage for him also.

14/7 Stage 8/13 Qilian – Zhangye : 210,3 km

Rasmussen reports: The stage starts in Qilian, from there into the Qilian Mountains with some hard climbs, and then descending from the Tibetan Plateau down into the Hexi Corridor (or Gansu Corridor) since ancient times an important silk route passage between the mountains and the Gobi desert.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Qilian%20Mountain%20Qilian-Zhangye_zpss99fkjhj.jpg

Pre-race: A long stage of 210.3 km, starting with some hard climbing, could be a breakaway win, or a mass sprint finish, but not likely it will change the GC a lot. We hope for Sondre Holst Enger to get a good sprint finish.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zps02g3bpor.jpg

It is still sunny and very hot in china. The morning breakaway is 4 riders, there is no reaction from the peloton and they have got over 12 minutes passing over the Hors Catégorie.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsl5eafgwf.jpg

The distance continues to grow and eventually we set some riders up front to help a little, just to make sure the break can’t get too much time.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1-1_zpsi9prn5ad.jpg

From the 20 km mark, the front group starts to attack each other, hoping to get away and claim a solo victory. Yelko Gomez (Caja Rural) with the first of several attacks:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsjf4i5gai.jpg

The group is together when the sprint starts, Emanuele Vona (Team Nippo) is the fastest on the last km. The peloton get in at 13'25.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsctlr2rjj.jpg

Rasmussen: Not the sprint finish we had hoped for, but it was too dangerous to use much energy today, the team is marked by many days in the hot sun.

14/7 stage 4/5 Muzeul Astra – Muzeul Astra ITT 11.4

Christian Andersen reports: Today relative short ITT starts from Muzeul Astra, or "ASTRA" National Museum Complex. The Romanian cultural association decided in 1897 to establish a museum of Romanian civilization, today the complex holds 4 Museums, Museum of Traditional Folk Civilization, Museum of Universal Ethnography, Museum of Transylvanian Civilisation and Museum of Saxon Ethnography.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1280px-ASTRA_National_Museum_Complex__main_entrance_of_the_Open_air_museum_Sibiu_zpsvrtdq8ck.jpg

Pre-race strategy: Todays ITT will be crucial, we hope that with the time gap Malacarne has, he can hold on to yellow. It is still very hot 37°C I am sure most rider will love the fact that today’s effort will be over at under 20 min.

Profile:

Lasse on the route:

Christian Andersen: Mixed feelings about this ITT, we can obviously by glad that Malacarne is still in the lead, and with quite some margin. On the other hand a horrible result in this stage, definitely the worst result in top 10; Bøchman a lot better, but not as good as we would like to see.

15/7 final stage 5/5 Sibiu – Sibiu 130.5 km

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/city%20center%20Sibiu_zps6i1frtcy.jpg

Christian Andersen: Today we have a short hilly stage in the Sibiu area. Sibiu was the center of the so called Transylvanian Saxons, a people of German ethnicity who settled in Transylvania in the 12 and 13 century, the settler obtained provisional autonomy under the kingdom of Hungary. Today most is the “Saxon” have emigrated back to Germany or Austria.

Market scene in Sibiu, Josef Lanzedelli (1818)

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Sibui_zpsexqy89iy.jpg

Pre-race strategy: The stage is a relative short and hilly, we expect a mass sprint finish. If possible Lasse Bøchman will attempt a breakaway to put the pressure on other teams. But it is most likely that it will be Pacheco fighting for the stage.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpssdy3ih8h.jpg

Very hot again today with 39°C, The morning break is 9 relative strong riders, they get a max. of about 4 min.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsimluqn44.jpg

Over the top of the cat1, Frederik Wilmann makes a solo attack and starts a pursuit on his own. With about 56 km left he catches up with the front group.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsfyhealoe.jpg

Getting close to the 10 km mark, the pace is too high for Wilmann, he can no longer hang on, but it looks like the breakaway has got a chance.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsjszcw0dd.jpg

The breakaway almost makes it to the line, but with amazing speed on the last 500 meters, Daryl Impey overtakes everyone and wins the stage over Alexey Lutsenko from the break. Our best is Francisco José Pacheco (6).

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zps9bqa38rg.jpg

16/7 Stage 9/13 Zhangye Circuits : 210,3 km

Rasmussen reports: Zhangye (張掖) is a city in the center of the Hexi Corridor, with a total population of over 1 mil, but only about 260.000 in the urban center. The area was concurred by the Chinese Han Dynasty in 121 BC, and Zhangye (earlier Ganzhou) became a prefecture. It is claimed that Kublai Khan was born here, and Marco Polo spend a year in the city.

From the Temple of the Great Buddha in Zhangye (from AD 1098) the sleeping wooden budda is 34.5 meters long:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/temple_zpspvdttysm.jpg

Pre-race strategy: This is a short and flat circuit stage with just a small hill, passed 5 times. We expect a short stage like this to be a stage for Sondre Holst Enger to compete for a podium. We hope to get a rider in a break if possible.

Profile

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpssdbzceuw.jpg

It is very hot again this morning 38°C, the morning break is 4 riders.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsodb0lbit.jpg

We set Mads Würtz Schmidt up front to help reel in the break.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpskjmnlbhw.jpg

We get a good train up Pedersen-Clausen-Enger, but the breakaway is still in front.

The stage is won by the local favorite Chinese Yan Dong Xing 邢彦东 (Champion System) over Gavin Mannion (Competitive) with 22 sec to the peloton.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsnzfu0l6t.jpg

17/7 Stage 10/13 Wuwei - Jingtai : 187.7 km

Rasmussen reports: The tour busses have traveled about 250 km east to Wuwei, in ancient times the city was also called Liangzhou (涼州), the area has been populated for 5000 years, being an important cultural and trade hub on the Silk route, important archaeological finds was made in Wuwei, and the area has many old temples. Today the city has about 1.8 mil. residents.

Bronze Running Horse (铜奔马), Wuwie (approx. 2nd century AD)

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Wuwie_zpscwoiftbt.jpg

Pre-race strategy:

With a very hard hill before and a long downhill finish, we don’t think this is a stage for Sondre Holst Enger, we will try to get Mitchell Lovelock-Fay or Martin Pedersen in a breakaway.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsgfzjdyf5.jpg

Right from the start Fabio Taborre (Vini Fantini) attacks, Martin Pedersen counters.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpspzuuk66f.jpg

It ends with a very strong break of 6 riders, looks like Martin Pedersen will have a hard time today, he is far from the strongest in the breakaway, when the road goes up. The break get more than 10 minutes.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpssldtgm2e.jpg

On the final hard climb, Martin has to let go of the group and find his own pace, he hopes to recover on the descent he is normally rather good on the downhill.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsfknp4hdq.jpg

Martin can’t make up for the lost time he never catch the front group again. The stage is won by Fredrik Kessiakoff (Katusha) with 22 sec. to Michele Gaia (Lampre), The peloton get in at 4'43.

18/7 Stage 11/13 Yinchuan: 123.1 km

Rasmussen reports: The caravan have traveled about 325 km north to Yinchuan the capital of the Ningxia Hui Region, originally called Fuping up to the 6th century. The city is known for the Western Xia tombs, including nine imperial mausoleums and 250 tombs of imperial relatives and officials, from Tangut Empire 1038- 1227.

Remains of one of the tombs:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Yinchuan_zpsbkconcwr.jpg

Pre-race strategy: We expect this to be a stage for Sonder, we will do our best to keep any break in line to make it a sprint finish.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsnzuuzes1.jpg

37°C and not a cloud in sight, it is going to be another hot day in the sun, but at least a short stage of only 123.1 km, the morning break is 9 riders, most of them with fine abilities on hilly roads.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpstcbc8thj.jpg

We does everything we can to pull back the break, on the last climb Mitchell Lovelock-Fay pull hard, and the break is almost over.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsbxzir67u.jpg

Under the 1 km mark, it is Garmin in front leading for Alex Rasmussen. Sonder is sitting fine in 4th position.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zps9pckbvzw.jpg

But it is not Sonder day, he runs dry 150 meters to early. The sage is won by Alex Rasmussen (Garmin) over Maxime Vantomme (GUNK), Sonder becomes 6th.
