Stage 5

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Profile-2.jpg

Today's stage has a few climbs throughout the race, but the finish is completely flat. After yesterdays long race, my legs are completely worn out and a day off would be nice, but that won't be happening.
Trying to continue the recent success of breakaways, a few riders attacked early in the stage. We tried to get McAree in the group.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/McAreeinbreak.jpg

But for the 3rd time in the race, we were unsuccessful and another group of riders formed the breakaway.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/breakaway.jpg

The breakaways gap continued to increase, until it became apparent that they would not be caught unless we sent riders to the front, so we sent 3 riders to do some hard turns at the front.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Bellisdoddshita.jpg

As soon as those riders faded, with 30km left, Moreno took advantage and attacked.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Morenogoes.jpg

I decided not to wait, and attacked along with Hesjedal.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/MeandHesjedalattack.jpg

Moreno was about 30 seconds ahead of us but still minutes behind the breakaway.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Morenoinlead.jpg

I sent Hesjedal to the front, and he led us through the hills, but Moreno was too strong and his lead kept increasing.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Hesjedalleading.jpg

Up front Sven Nys beat all the other breakaway riders and held off Moreno to take the stage win. Moreno had caught up to the break and managed to avoid time gaps.(I missed the screen of Nys celebrating). I had attacked hoping to catch Moreno but at the finish I was passed by Hivert. Not only that but I had lost 1'32 on Moreno.

Stage 6

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Profile.jpg

Today's stage has a few climbs but none of them are very difficult. I feel much better today than I did yesterday so I like my chances. The screenshots of the breakaway and what happened early didn't save so we will pick up with 40km to go. On the 2nd to last climb some of the favorites began attacking. The first of these was Benitez.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Benitez.jpg

It wasn't much longer when Hivert also rode away.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Hivertattacks.jpg

I, however, was waiting for Moreno to go and as soon as he attacked Hesjedal and I attacked.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Mechasingmoreno.jpg

Unlike yesterday, I was able to keep up with Moreno and we formed the leading group of favorites. There were still 4 different groups from where the breakaway had shattered ahead of us, but they were not a threat.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/morenomegrouo.jpg

I would have sent Hesjedal to the front but Moreno was more than willing to do the work. He was looking to get more time on the yellow jersey. Eventually, Moreno was tiring and I saw him cracking. I needed time on Moreno so I attacked, leaving him behind.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Iattackagain.jpg

Just as it was two days ago, I was by myself chasing the other riders down.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/Mechasingothers.jpg

I passed rider after rider, and it looked like I had a chance to win, but with 1km left it was clear I would not catch the leading two riders.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/MEhivert.jpg

Mario Alerts too the win for Silence Lotto. Add another tally to the breakaway this race.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%205-6/lottowin.jpg

I had also been joined by Hivert, and we sprinted to the finish line. I finished in a great 8th place. I took time from Moreno but Moreno took the yellow jersey. All I need to do is be within striking distance come the stage 10 time trial.

Stage 7

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/Profile-1.jpg

Today's stage finishes with a treacherous climb that will be very difficult for all the riders. I didn't feel as good as I did yesterday but I still like my chances, since I think I'm finally on good form and I'm the best climber here. A large group of 13 riders broke away early in the stage and managed to built up a small gap.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/11riderbreak.jpg

At the bottom of the final climb, the breakaway's gap was around 3 minutes. The first favorite to attack was from Skil-Shimano, but it wasn't Hivert, it was Rodrigo Garcia. Maybe he's looking to set Hivert up later.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/Garciaattacks.jpg

With 22km left, Moreno finally attacked.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/Morenoattacks.jpg

I knew he would be attacking soon, but I still wasn't prepared because I was waiting on my final bottles of water. Hesjedal was the only rider strong enough to go to the back and then make his was up through the peloton to give it to me. Once I got my water bottles I attacked, but was it too late?

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/Iattacklate.jpg

No, not only did I catch Moreno, but I left him behind.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/Ipassmoreno.jpg

I didn't have Hesjedal with me, and I was still behind the breakaways riders. I chased them down all by myself, and with 7km to go I caught the leader.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/Icatchleader.jpg

Moreno had, Tondo, leading the chasing group hoping to limit my lead. He needed to keep me withing 45 seconds if he wanted to hold on to the jersey.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/Morenotondochasing.jpg

With 5km left, Moreno wasn't nearby but Hivert was.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/meleading.jpg

I kept climbing, afraid to turn around. I pushed harder and harder and with 1km left, I was still in the lead, but I was told by the Director that Moreno was in 2nd, chasing hard.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/1kmtogo.jpg

I had taken the victory, but had I taken the jersey.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/Iwin.jpg

Moreno pushed hard hoping to hold on to the jersey. I wasn't sure what happened but I knew it was going to come down to seconds.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/Morenofinishes.jpg

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%207/VICTORY.jpg

I won the jersey by 1 second. Amazing victory and I'm glad to have the yellow jersey. Can't get much closer than this.

Stage 8

Today is a flat stage but the high wind speeds will not make things easy. I was able to sit back for the early part of this race, wearing my new yellow jersey that I earned yesterday.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%208-9/Meinyellow.jpg

In the lead was 2 groups, one with 2 riders and another with only 1 rider. Despite the lack of numbers, they were able to build a large gap.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%208-9/thebreak.jpg

Eventually, the high winds forced a split in the peloton. Bellis, McAree, and Dodds were in the first group but I had missed it, and was only in the 2nd group. All the riders dropped back and joine my group. The leading group was only 24 riders and none of them were anywhere close to me in the GC so we let other teams chase. But no one did, and the gap reached 3 minutes. As it has been all week, no one is willing to do any work and the breakaway continued to ride away. With 30km to the leading group was no where in site.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%208-9/chasingsplit.jpg

Even though everyone was worn out, we sent riders up front to limit the lead. We were able to get it back within 2 minutes but they would not be caught. Giordani was holding off the leading peloton and looked like he would take the win.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%208-9/Giordani.jpg

But he was passed by Brown, and Brown took another victory for Silence Lotto.

Stage 9
Another flat stage but the wind is no where near as high as yesterday so hopefully there won't be any problems. McAree was FINALLY successful in getting into a break.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%208-9/McAreeattacks.jpg

However, for once the breakaway was caught Shock . The sprinters began setting up and we set up a large train. Close, followed by me, Bellis, and then Dodds. With 6km left Close left me in charge. I was able to put Dodds in great position and with 2.5km left, I pulled out.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%208-9/Bellistakesover.jpg

And Dodds rode away to a victory, beating the other sprinters by bike lengths. But the big news was that there was a gap. The fast pace by the trains had split the peloton in two, and I was in the lead group. Moreno was not, and finished 46 seconds back.

Stage 10

Today is a 38km time trial where a lot of time can be made up, but Moreno is not good enough to make up 48 seconds, so I will be safe in my Yellow Jersey. There aren't any elite time trialists here,so I have a great chance of winning. In 5th place was Morabito, who adds to his good Volta, finishing only 1'06 left.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%2010/Morabito.jpg

Ben Hermans, who was often active in the breakaways, was now proving he was a strong time trialer, finishing 4th beating Morabito by 3 seconds.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%2010/Hermans.jpg

Hounard continues a great race for Skil-Shimano, holding the best time for most of the race, but in the end he finishes 3rd.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%2010/Hounard.jpg

In 2nd was Moreno's biggest helper in the race, Xavi Tondo. I didn't expect such a strong ride from him, but he was good enough to move into 8th place, despite working for Moreno for most of the race.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%2010/Tondo.jpg

I was the last rider to go, and I felt great. I knew that I would still be holding the yellow jersey at the end of the stage, but by how much? I jumped off the start ramp and began the race out of the saddle.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%2010/Istart.jpg

With 6km left, and Moreno in the distance, I got out of the saddle again and pushed to try to catch him.

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%2010/6kmtogo.jpg

And as I approached the finish, Moreno was just meters ahead of me. I had shattered Moreno, but had I won the stage?

i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/matthew493/Daniel%20Martin/2011/Volta%20a%20Portugal/Stage%2010/Ifinish.jpg

Yes, by a large ammount. I dominated the stage beating Tondo by 54 seconds, showing that I am ready for the Vuelta.
