Vuelta a Espana

Stages 18 - 21

Stage 18

The peloton was down to 85 on top of the third climb. The attacks continued from the pack but no favourites had yet made a move. I had two teammates left. The peloton was further halved on the summit of the next climb and I didn't have any teammates left. I positioned myself in the leading positions on the HC climb, and attacked with Yates and Meintjes 3 km from the summit. The gap increased to the pack on the descent. Yates attack at the start of the last climb. I didn't follow but stuck to my own pace. Meintjes and myself caught up to Yates with 11 km to go. I dropped the others another 2 km later. I increased the gap to the duo steadily but couldn't catch the break. I finished 4th on the stage, gaining more than 3 minutes on Yates. Vincent in the break gained 5 minutes on Yates, moving up to 2nd in the GC.

Stage 19

i.imgur.com/p0bnWGF.png

Most of the favourites attacked or followed the initial attack at the start of the climb to the finish. I was around a minute behind when things settled down. I continued at my own pace till the finish, losing around 90 seconds on the stage. I was still leading the GC by more than 6 minutes!

Stage 20

i.imgur.com/msFXK2u.png

Rain greeted us on the second climb. The team pushed a strong acceleration on the third climb. I got away at the end of it. Yates and Meintjes caught up and then dropped me before the finish. I was a minute down at this point. The time kept yo-yoing around the 2 minute mark on the climb to the finish. I lost just under 2 minutes at the finish to the duo, as it snowed on the summit of the Angliru. My lead was trimmed to 4'18", with the final stage ITT to come.

Stage 21

i.imgur.com/B2Z6OGI.png

The ITT suited me very well. I reversed all losses to Yates on the previous two stages, catching and passing him on the road to confirm back to back Vuelta wins.

i.imgur.com/p0tJhyF.png

I finished the stage in 7th. Besides winning the GC, I finished 4th in the Points standings.

World Championships - Individual Time Trial

i.imgur.com/KueJy0T.png

I was not in the best shape coming into the World Championships, having not raced since the Vuelta victory. Nevertheless, last season's good result, coupled with the aim of keeping the winning feeling going, was an excellent motivator.

The course did not exactly match my strengths, as it was too flat for me to make a dent into the pure TT riders. I rode my lap well, going through the intermediates in 1st and 2nd place, and placing 2nd when I finished. However, the favourites blew away my time! I finished in 25th, more than 2 minutes down to eventual winner Grodecki. Lindenbergh claimed the SIlver for the Netherlands.

World Championships - Road Race

i.imgur.com/doQOD6d.png

Having missed out on the WC RR team last season, I was more determined to do well. With the course as it was, Groenewegen was one of the top favourites, while I was given a free role.

The peloton allowed just one rider to form the break but he did pull out a 6 minute lead. The technical course meant riders were dropped at regular intervals and only 43 remained in the peloton with 15 km remaining. Groenewegen was dropped, so we had to change strategy!

Ewan and Sagan attacked with 10 km left. They couldn't get away, but their acceleration helped catch the break 2 kilometers later. 33 riders remained at this point. I attacked with 4 km left, just before the crest of the final hill. A ten rider group were in chase.

I had no choice but to push as hard as I could from a long way out. Unfortunately, it didn't work. I was caught with 1500 meters left. I had nothing left to sprint and finished 10th. This was still my best ever result in the World Championships.
