We're out of the world of sprinters again for stage 5. A difficult race with many hills will lead us to the skiing resort of Zakopane. With tomorrow's difficult stage in the Tatra mountains the GC riders may decide to take some rest and let a break go, but who knows? The weather may discourage everyone though.

Race report

Most riders have indeed been discouraged. It takes us 10km for an attack. Belkov (Katusha) is off.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2006.jpg

Bonnafond (AG2R) and Pauwels (QuickStep) try to reach him.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2007.jpg

So do Moinard (BMC), yesterday's last escapee Fédrigo (FDJ) and mountain jersey wearer Machado (Radioshack).
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2008.jpg

When Moser (Cannondale) attacks Sky has seen too many riders in front and Edmondson therefore decides to increase the pace.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2009.jpg

Eventually the pack lets the group of 7 go. The extreme rain of today may have discouraged a high pace.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2010.jpg

BMC has the right of the first crash today, as Moinard is down from the break. Luckily he does rejoin.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2011.jpg

The first mountain sprint is won by Moser, who now equals Urán in that competition.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2012.jpg

When Moinard eventually rejoins with 108km to go the gap has risen to a massive 11 minutes already!
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2013.jpg

Crash no.2 for today is for CCC's leader Rebellin, who manages to rejoin the pack.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2014.jpg

Only 2 riders are interested in the mountain points. The hierarchy of these two once again becomes clear as Moser wins sprint #2 as well.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2015.jpg

The pack meanwhile has set up some low-pace chase. Surprisingly Sky isn't part of it.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2016.jpg

The gap keeps on rising though. With 85km to go the lead is 14 minutes, meaning Geniez is now the virtual GC-leader!
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2017.jpg

Because the lead 5km later is a quarter already, Champion System decides to make some serious pace in the pack. The gap is decreasing for the first time today.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2018.jpg

Climb 3: Moser, Bonnafond, Machado.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2019.jpg

14 minutes and 8 seconds after Moser the pack, lead by Butler, reaches the foggy summit, which is 63 kilometers away from the finish line.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2020.jpg

A few minutes later Machado surprises Moser at the next climb.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2021.jpg

The pack's high pace has brought the lead under 13 minutes, which means Costa is once again virtual GC leader.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2022.jpg

With 38km to go a shock in the pack, as Van den Broeck is dropped! No crash or material failure, it seems bad positioning.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2023.jpg

In front the pack has found some extra resources, as Belkin, Omega Pharma and Sky now replace the tired Champion System riders. However, with 25km to go for the break the lead is still 11 minutes.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2024.jpg

Attack from the pack! With 27km to go Dan Martin, Urán and Kwiatkowski attack!
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2025.jpg

Up front, just 20km from the line, Moser wins the penultimate mountain sprint and unless something weird happens he'll wear the jersey tomorrow.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2026.jpg

In the chaos Moinard is dropped by his companions.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2027.jpg

In the pack a group splits off. Kim seems the main victim in the big group, although Bardet, Ghita, De las Campos and many others can be found behind. Van den Broeck is still behind this group even.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2028.jpg

With 20km to go Costa jumps, together with Henao, to Uráns group.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2029.jpg

Kiserlovski, Majka, De Vries and Duarte try to do the same thing.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2030.jpg

Meanwhile up front Geniez has attacked at the final mountain sprint, leaving the others behind. Could he grab a stage win for FDJ here?
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2031.jpg

At the foot of the final, short climb, he has distanced the others. A stage win seems inevitable for the Frenchman.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2032.jpg

The two packs meanwhile merge. Urán and his group are a minute ahead and Mollema gives up the chase.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2033.jpg

Geniez survived the final climb without trouble and can now head straight to the finish line in a short descent.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2034.jpg

A bit later the chasers do the same. Pauwels isn't sprinting though, he apparently ran out of energy.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2035.jpg

And Geniez takes a win for FDJ! After yesterday's attempt of Fédrigo the attacking of FDJ is rewarded with a stage win today.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2036.jpg

Moser is today's first loser -or not, as he did take the mountains jersey-. Bonnafond 3rd, Belkov 4th, Machado 5th, Pauwels 6th, Moinard 7th.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2037.jpg

At the final categorized climb the battle is still fierce. A series of attacks, initiated by Kwiatkowski, is not countered by Urán, who now has to set up a chase after Martin and Costa.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2038.jpg

Majka and De Vries drop Duarte and Kiserlovski.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2039.jpg

Costa wins the sprint for 8th and takes some important seconds over Urán.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2040.jpg

After Majka and De Vries sprint for 13th we see Mollema has made an incredible effort to catch up with Kiserlovski and Duarte. 17th for the Dutchman is disappointing though.
i40.photobucket.com/albums/e206/Selwink1/EPIC%20Reports/PCM2041.jpg

Today's biggest loser seems to be Van den Broeck though, as he loses 8(!) minutes to Costa.

Hmm, offday for Mollema it seems. Too bad, I was hoping for a GC podium.

Po-ding might still get a top 10, but he needs a great time trial.

PS: This isn't thursday! Pfft

Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Geniez ones of our most surprising riders this season, being nice and consistent. Just reward for yesterdays last second loss. He's gonna be a solid part of next years team

The second stage of the race sees the peloton swap Scotland for England, and although the start city of Carlisle sits on the path of Hadrian’s Wall, the riders are unlikely to be troubled by barbarians this time round, We hope...

Upon leaving the start, the race heads into the Lake District, where a number of climbs will be fought on. The most difficult of these will be the Honister Pass, the steep gradients of which (25 per cent in places) have seen it deemed a category one climb

This stage can be considered a mini version of Liege-Bastogne-Liege, even though the climb are steeper, they are also shorter. But the daring pace in this terrain costs much energy and the first time differences will be sorted out today. As said before this will be where Men are sorted out of the Kids

Climb Spotlight

Buttermere / High Crag

www.themountainguide.co.uk/public/geophotos/1464003.jpg

Is one of the hardest climbs on the route and in Britain in general, the highest point is at 744 meters and the roadside the riders are going up on is at 15 % average with the start of the climb being 21 % steep. Even though it's a short climb of 4 km's the tempo shifts every minute and is on a technical level of a Mountain from a Grand Tour.

Honister Pass

www.visitcumbria.com/photos/simon/honister-0544_1.jpg

Honister pass is a pass, which goes through the mountain range of the same name. With 100 km's to go of the stage it starts, and it is a fine example of the hardiness of the Tour of Britain. When you enter the pass you will find small climbs with around 25 % and the terrain goes up and down for the next 60 kilometers.

The pass can be compared with Liege - Bastogne - Liege's last 100 kilometres and the only difference is that here the terrain is a lot worse and the British Autumn will perhaps add some harsh wind, which will be most determinating for the outcome of the stage. So in short this stage is a mini version of LBL with higher Climb percents, but smaller climbs.

It's here on the end of Crummock Water, that the terrain will become the riders worst nightmare, as they enter the Honister Pass!

A group of 40 men is the first to drop, no big favorites in this group though

After a hard day, Diego Ulissi still have energy to pull of an attack! There is currently only 19 km left!

However after an uneventful few minutes Bob Jungels and guess who else..Adrien Hanzen has sneaked his way up and attacks with Jungels!

No one could stop Ulissi though and the Italian secures a deserved win for a team, that needs some help with getting back on their feet after this! Hanzen holds the favorite group behind him and gets 2nd while Bob Jungels takes 3rd. This means that Ulissi has 1 minute and 30 seconds to take on for tomorrows 17 km long Time Trial!

Interview

We have been joined for a quick Interview with Lampre - Merida manager sutty68

First to mention will be that your team haven't performed as well as it should be, how had your eye on the season been ?

I have to admit that i was hoping for more from the team this season but unfortunately they haven't delivered the results i wanted.

With a strong lineup , which includes Diego Ulissi , what are your expectations for this race ?

Ulissi is by far the strongest rider we have sent to the Tour of Britain so we are hoping that a top ten placing will be achieved.

The terrain is probably the most hardest part of this Tour of Britain, will your team be able to defend the leaders jersey based on that ?

I am really hoping so.

What is your reaction of this stage win?

Any stage win would be greatly received by the Management here.

Interesting, Ulissi should be able to hold this, as we've all seen Hanzen's TT skills in Denmark Wink
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Hopefully this means Hanzen will be a serious contender for the Points Jersey as well as more stage wins. There are tougher stages to come but a good GC might be possible. Wiggins and Thomas look strong for Sky.

Of course Moser gets 2nd. Spent way to much energy going after the KoM jersey. Still, at least he did something, which can't be said about Basso. Smile

Costa is doing great in Poland. 44 seconds to Uran = Nothing lost yet!

I hope the replay of Quebec will be as thrilling as the first try and especially Schröder and Costa as active as before...

Well, even for me, today is a new low. No comment.

Don't worry guys, Jeremy Powers is hard at work testing our new bike for next season's descents...
